Watmore score at
Satuaro night MX
By Nancy Keyes
TIJCSON, AZ, SEPT. 6
A beautiful evening with a few
light sprinkles made racing quite
pleasant at Saguaro _Racew~y's
MX as our 1980 evenmg racmg
season draws shorter with few races
left before we go to days. Sono~a,
Mexico was well represented with
several riders present.
The 125cc Expert race was one of
the most exciting with Tibbs
McCullough pulling the holeshot the
first moto, going on to win with a huge
lead. Eddie Wearden from EI Paso
finished second and Roger McCluskey
was third.
The second moto saw Buddy
Thomison pull the holeshot with
David King and Todd Phillips pressing close ~ehind. King overtook T~o
mison on the first lap and Phllhps
went down doming out of the valley.
Meanwhile, McCullough, who had
gotten buried in the back at the start,
was working his way through the pack
gaining quickly with each. lap.. Tho·
mison and Wearden colhded 10 the
wan berm giving McCullough the
chance to pick up some extra seconds
and finish second behind King. Mc
Cullough took the overall with Mc
Cluskey second and Wearden third.
Pat Eggman finished both motos
in the 125cc Junior class with a
huge lead, Joseph Petruska taking second and Ray Wimmer third.
The 250cc Expert race was a real
crowd pleaser. Ron Watmore pulled
the holeshot for the first moto with
Carlos Serrano and David King close
behind. At the end of lap one, Wat·
more was still leading, but Serrano al·
most got him as he took a spectacular fall over the jumps by the tower.
At the end of the second lap, King
went down on the s!'me jump leaving
Watmore first, Brett Hanna second
and Rick Watmore third. Serrano
worked his way back to second and
Mike Garratt finished third.
The second moto, King was first out
of the hole and rode it straight to
the fLOish with Ron Watmore second
and Wearden third. The overall went
to Watmore with King second and
Garratt third.
