In the first moto Staten jumped into the lead right from the start while Northrup locked on to second. Benavidez came around at the end of lap one far behind the rest of the pack, but he was soon picking off riders one at a time and catching up. On the third lap he passed the desert duo of Larry Roeseler (Yam) and Bruce Ogilvie (Yam) to move into fourth behind Norman Nilsson (Hus), then he kept on going to nab third. Staten and Northrup were long gone by that time, but in the last laps Benavidez did cut the distance in half. The next time up. Benavidez and Northrup jumped into the early lead while Staten followed Nilsson. But it wasn't long before Staten moved into third. Several laps later he passed Northrup. and then it was Benavidez who was displaced. In the remainder of the moto Staten pulled ahead while Benavidez made a last lap mistake to lose second 10 Northrup. In the 125cc Pro class it was anothe~ repeat of past weeks. Varney Holbrook and his AI Baker Suzuki took both motos hands down. Stan Galvez (Suz) held off Holbrook for the first lap of moto one, but that was the only time that saw anyone other than Holbrook in front. M·ike Edson of Yamaha of R ...dlands kept a good pace to nail second in both motos. In the 250cc Novice dass Jeff Leighty (Yam) and Scott Conaway (Yam) split wins with Conaway getting the overall. Leighty led most of moto one. but Conaway and Rick Vanderham managed to pass him in the late laps. Kit Palmer (Suz) also made a late move to take fourth from Paul Bassett (Yam). In the next moto, Leighty was on top of every lap. Vanderham held down second until he crashed. giving the spot to Conaway who was holding off Palmer. Then it was Palmer's turn to go down and put Vanderham back into the top three. Overall, Conaway got the brass over Leighty and Vanderham. Results MINI BEG: ,. David Hollenkamp (Sull: 2. Schaeffer scoots atAMEnight minicross Simmons summons OCIRMXwin By Tom Corley By Tom Corley VALENCIA. CA. SEPT. 5 IRVINE. CA. SEPT. 4 The American Motocross Enterprises controlled the Indian Dunes Park tonight and they had a good crowd of racers in both the Mini Motocross racers from all over the SoCal area were anxiously awaiting the La Habra Yamaha· night at OCIR. Sure enough. a and big motorcycle races. The fine action at the Dunes will continue throughout September and straight through October and then the night racing will cease till sometime in 1981. Five races formed on the night's program and some good racing was seen. Sandy Schaeffer came through as the top rider in the 83cc Stock Beginner race. Schaeffer took two straight wins but did not lead all of the races. In the final moto Royce Hager got the holeshot but fell at the back of the track. Sandy then took the lead till the race was over. Robert Knollmiller came in second with muddy plates and David Shier was third in that moto. On the overall results it was Schaeffer, Knollmiller, Shier and Royce Hager. There we·re two brothers racing in the Pee Wee class and they were Jason andJonny Biggs. The Biggs seem to fit on very little bikes. Funny combination isn't it? They had sort of a match race in the Junior class because they were the only two involved in the race. Jason proved to be the fastest with two first place wins over Jonny. In a far more competitive race Troy Welty blew away the Junior Cycle Stock Junior class. leading each moto and was followed by Steven Kotajarvi who just turned eight years old. On the results it was Welty, Kotajarvi, Matt Blacklock and Ron Densford. great crowd of riders were on hand to win the prizes. In fact it was the largest turnout that has shown up all year long as a good 200 racers 1/;01 involved. Most of the classes were a little more competitive than usual and this was good to see. Todd Simmons is getting back into the swing of things and with good success. He smoked the 250cc Intermediate class in style by taking both motos. Simmons had a perfect score and whipped Wayne Reid and Pat Nash who is now back in action after laying off of bikes for several years. On the official results it was Simmons. Nash. Anderson, Tom MiDer and Reid. Larry White was nearly as fortunate in the 500cc Intermediate class. He won it overall but lost the first moto to Rod Drury. White went even faster in the final race and this time Doug Rand was the second place finisher ahead of Drury. The overall order was White, Drury and Rand. Danny Tinsman turned a fine win in the Mini Beginner division two 13 and over class. Tinsman tried his hand at Ascot just the night before and found the rest of the troops to be pretty fast so he took a third. This was his night though and he ended up on top in the results which ended up this way: Tinsman, Dan Carpenter, Ed Gauley and Lou Gabriel. Results Results PEE WEE JR: 1. Jaon Biggs ISU11: 2.
