"Mad Many" Vogel (Clone Brothers Racing RD400) scored his
first win in AFM competition in
what was, for sure, the toughest
race of the day. Howard Monise (Specialists Two RD400), Larry Theobald
(T&O
Yamaha
RD400),
John
Chermak (Berkeley Yamaha RD350),
and Pat Eagan (NO/Cycle World Moriwaki Honda Hawk) all took their turn
at leading the race. With the help of
Mark Ingalls (T.T. Motors RD400),
the front five positions changed constantly. A good example of the heat of
the battle was the sixth lap when
Vogel, Eagan, Chermak, and Theobald
went into turn two almost perfectly
side by side with Ingalls about a bike
length behindl No position in the first
five was secure until the drop of the
checkered flag. With two laps to go,
Eagan held a slim lead entering turn
18. He discovered his rear tire was
completely flat when the bike pitched
sideways and he was forced to run off
the track. The next lap in the same
turn, Ingalls used Theobald's front
tire to polish his own muffler when he
passed and closed the gate on Larry.
On the final tum of the last lap, Ingalls
tried polishing Vogel's muffler in a
vain attempt to win the race.
Newly crowned AMA Novice
Champ Thad Wolff (TZ250) made it
look too easy in his runaway romp of
250cc GP. A pack consisting of
Dwayne Chunl/; (Bill Johnson/Hungry
Motors/Berkeley Yam TZ250), John
Williams (Barong M/C Salvage TZ250),
Glen Shoper (PJI/ND/Shoei/Farm
House Rest./DKG TZ250), and Fred
Winters (ND/D.A.D. TZ250) made it
hard for each other as Thad pulled
away at more than a second a lap. To
amuse himself and the spectators,
Wolff was pulling wheelies out of turn
19. Winters gained control of second
place, but Thad was long gone. Possibly Thad can repeat for an AMA
Championship next year in the Light'
weight Expert class.
The 430cc Box Stock class had a
race for first which went down to the
wire. Conrad Brooks (RD400) pulled a
better start than Perry Stein (South
Coast Honda Hawk) and looked set to
win. But Perry had other things in
mind. Closer and closer he got every
lap trying to make up for his starting
deficit. With one lap to go, Stein
passed Brooks on the front straightaway.
They rode the last lap nose to tail.
Encountering a lappee on the last turn
of the race, Perry went wide to go
around him and Conrad dove underneath and outdrove Perry to the line
by a bikelength,
In the Superstreet races, Dennis
Smith (Cycle Tune GS1000 SUlJ) beat
Tracy Grieger (KZ1000 Kaw). Wendell
Phillips (Mr. Jags Norton) won 750cc
SIS and Bob Runyon was uncontested·
winner of 600cc SIS.
. Chris Baur (Kolbe Honda/Dunlop
175 Can-Am) showed a lot of courage
rid.ing with an undiagnosed stomach
problem which w~s causing a bit of
pain. Nonetheless, after a battle with
Frank Mazur (RD250 Yam), she pulled
away to win her class and the overall.
