Western hotline Chris MacKay in action at Ascot. Most riders seem to go for the completely equipped motocross outfit from head to toe. Raymond Lyon, satisfied with a pair of blue overalls, could be easily identified from the rest of the pack. He led in the first 125cc Junior division two moto and held off Skip Early and Chris Sestich. Lyon was down in the final moto and the race was between Early and Richard Thomas. Those two went through the finish and hit ~he ground as they struggled for the lead. And once again Chris Sestich was in the third place position. OverallĀ· it was Early, Thomas, Chris Sestich and Lyon. The racing was excellent in the Mini classes. In the 50cc Intermediate class John Mathews scored the best once again. He is a sure bet for the win provided he doesn't get too radical while trying to look good before the camera. Newton Acevedo took second ahead of Jason McFarland and Prax Cruz. Results MINI 50 JR: 1. Hames, Cannon battle at Corona ST/HM 16 By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA, AUG. 27 The racing action is heating up at Corona Raceway as many of the regulars return from successful toUTS to the midwest and continue their winning ways. The king of the ovals was a hard fought duel between Pete Hames and Chris Cannon with luck, skiU and equipment all playing a major role. The 250cc Money short track saw the "Simi Flash," Pete Hames, off in front with Jim Rosa, Chris Cannon and Mike Paulson in hot pursuit. Hames picked his line and started opening up a lead as Rosa held Cannon at bay for two laps. Cannon found the hole he was looking for and went by Rosa with a hungry look in his eye as he set out after Hames. Hames wasn't planning on being the main course and held Cannon off to take the checkered with Rosa third. The Open Money short track again saw Hames and Cannon squaring off against one another and again it was Hames who got the holeshor but this time Cannon was right there in second with Bobby Sanders third. Can!,on's Rich Plueger-prepared 750cc Yamaha proved to be too healthy for Hames' 500cc Yamaha and the Norco rider claimed the lead on the third lap and never looked back. Hames put a solid , lock on second and let Bobby Sanders hold off the rest of the field which he did until the white flag lap when Mike Hale puUed a smoothie that landed him the third place spot. Hames and Cannon were dead even in the win column as they rolled to the line for the 250cc Money half mile. At the drop of the flag Hames jumped to the fronc with Cannon practicaUy riding double with him and Jimmy Rosa a not very distant third. As Hames and Cannon started pulling away from the rest .of the field Rosa found himself caught up in a three rider battle for third as Terry Singleton got the edge on Greg Gaw on the fourth lap and two laps later had Rosa chasing him. At the checkered it was Hames, Cannon and Singleton. With only the Open Money half mile to go the score was now 2-1 and Hames had to have the awesome display of power put on by Cannon in the Open short track in the back of his mind as he rolled to the line. Surprise was on everyone's face as Mike Hale got the edge on the start but it was Hale, Cannon, Sanders and Hames who aU hit tum one at the same time. Hale and Cannon went low and Sanders and Hames were high. Sanders got sideways, forcing Hames out even further and it was Hale, Cannon, Sanders and Hames as they flew down the back straight. As they headed into tum three on the second lap Hale had the wick up too high and kissed the wall, causing the red flag to come out. A single file restart was called with everyone moving up one spot when Hale was unable to return. This time Hames was ready and he had the start wired, taking the lead and then doing some fancy riding to hold the advantage over Cannon. Hames just held it on a little bit longer and a whole lot harder. When the dust had settled it was Hames with his third win of the night, Cannon second, Bobby Sanders third and Shawn Leipold fourth. The "Not So Over The Hill Gang" put in another appearance on the half mile and the nubmers are growing. A new face made the winner's circle as Pat McCain outdistanced all comers. Mike Mockbee changed the order of things as he had riding buddy and two time winner Bill Bartels chasing him for a change. Ron Ferguson was fourth. Winningest rider of the night honors went to Curtis Cannon as he collected all the Mini Amateur/Expert and 125cc Amateur/Expert goes to collect four. Results SHORT TRACK MINI NOV: 1. Blakeslee four of fiveatARRA Carlsbad By Pat Eagan CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. 24 In the first road race held at Carlsbad Raceway in five years, Whitney Blakeslee of Champion .Kawasaki showed what a champion he is by entering five races and winning four of them. Striking trouble with his own KllOOO, he borrowed Mike Krolick's KZ750 to score easy wins in Open GP and Open Cafe. Earlier, he ran away with Open FourStroke GP with his KllOOO Box Stocker, Mter finishing third to 550cc Box Stock winner Rob Radel (V.I.P. Kawasaki), Paul Turek turned over his KZ550 to Whitney who took the first half a dozen laps of the 550cc Production race to get used to the bike. As the lapS continued, Whitney went faster. In the latter stages of the race, Radel's motor slowed - possibly the result of a few missed shifts. On the 15th lap of the 15-lap race, Whitney passed Rob on the top end of the front straight a dramatic finish. Rob finished a safe second; his engine very tired and noisy. Blakeslee's only defeat of the day came at the hands of newcomer Chris Steward (GSIOOO Suzulti) in Open Box Stock. More drama unfolded. On the first start, one of Steward's contact lenses popped out after half a lap, causing Chris to pull off the track. The race continued for a couple of laps until it was red flagged because of carnage on the track. Steward breathed a sigh of relief as he got a second chance at Blakeslee. On the restart, Steward's contacts stayed in place and he played a waiting game. After the halfway point, he turned up the wick and dispatched Whitney in a convincing manner. A well-deserved win, as anyone who can _ pass and beat Blakeslee is obviously a good rider. Chris' other win came in Open Production where he experienced no competition. Rudy Galindo took to the Carlsbad track like a BSA to oil. John Glover (Ontario Honda MTI25R) had only been defeated once in the 125cc GP class this year. H is second loss was profound as Rudy pulled away at about a second a lap on his Can-Am-engined Tommy Crawford special. Rudy had even less competition in 250cc GP on Mel Dinizen's old T A250 Yamaha. "Mad Marty" Vogel (Clone Brothers Racing Team) surprised no one by winning 450cc Production. The surprise came from Steve Redding (South Coast Honda Hawk). In only his second road race meet, took a close second to Marty on his Box Stocker after he had earlier won his Box Stock race. If Redding continues to improve at the same rate, we'll have a new National champion in five weeks. There were problems with the track surface, but the new club owner, Earl Smith, is anxious to get feedback from the riders as to whether they will come back and what changes the riders feel are necessary.
