Novice action at the Clackamas TT. Honda rips Clackamas Regionaln By Bill Spencer CLACKAMAS, OR,JULY 13 It was the regular Sunday night Regional Championships after the National except there wasn't really a National this year. Well, 32 at least not at Castle Rock. The 1980 version was held at Randy and Dena Scott's and T iny Tuner and Bart Barfly were th e usual bar room brawl ers who won even at poker. Though reo covered from Saturday night before the race Sunday night , Randy Scott decided not to ride as he was still holding his sides together after a ripping truck accid ent in June . Team Honda 's Mickey Fay was hom e in between Nationals and rode an XR500 to fast time over John Wincewicz and Brad Hurst with Billy Oli ver fou rt h . Jeff McDaniels was fast Junior less than ~.ths off fast Expert time with Ron Yamamoto just behind on the Rob Muzzy YZ465. Dan Atkin son took the third fastest less than a blink behind Yamamoto with J imbo Filice fourth fastest on the Mert Law will/ T eam Yam a ha TT500. Fay ran off wit h the first Expert heat as the usual drizzles required som e change in the regu lar program . Bu tch Brown took the second over Frank Word a nd Lars Trulson. John Wince· wicz, the "Wi za rd," won the second affair over Mike Inderbi tzen who 's back riding the Ra y Celorie-tuned T riumph . J eff Campbell took th ird over Don Dodge. Hurst took the third heat over Jeff Celorie and Scott Pearson who was on the Harry Lillie , ND 'sparked Yamaha 750 with Dennis Fitze in over Mark Legarra and Bernie Larson. In the only Expert semi, it was Dodge th e winner over Trulson and Tom McCulloch. Dennis Fitze, Billy Oliver and Jeff Celorie were going to sit things ou t. Jeff McDaniels ran off with the first Junior hea t over Don Montgomery and Rich Winningham while Ron Yarnamoto mixed th ings up in th e second with Arnie W ick and Tom Cameron. Rich Arnaiz a nd Dan Atkinson did the deed in the thrid over Rick y Baptista while Bret Barkman got his act together in the right direction to win th e fourth round beating out J im Filice , Sal Hoffman on Pearson's spare and Ch ris Fitz hugh. Two Junior sem is saw Hoffman take a shot in th e main over Tom Cameron and Harry Thomas while Da ve Ryan got the nod in the other over Brian Haycock and Rich Winningham. In the Novice main it was a red Honda all the way. Mark Rooks got himself a good start and pushed off to the land of checkered flags with little problem. Dale Hansen held the second spot for some time while Billy Scott and Pat Seigle moved through the pack to round up the front runners. Scott made the pass on Hansen , but there was no way he could catch the CR250R and that was that for th is event. It was pretty much a one-sided affair in the Junior main as Jeff McDaniels took th e XR500 to th e fore along with Bret Barkman and Rich Arnaiz. On the third lap, Jim Filice made an outside move that would have rounded up four riders had it worked . Jimbo had never finished a race here as a Novice and the disabled Randy Scott was out to give the former Na tional Novice champion a little insight int o rid ing the downhill . When it became obvious that a d rastic step was necessary while riding sixth in the main , the little speedste r Rave it a try. Going downhill on the ba ck stretch, he gathered up his courage and kept the gas on as they entered the bottom second, four abreast and all on th e gas . The momentum from holding the outside line and traction from the cushion helped accelerate the T eam Yamaha machine in front of the others, but the never-ending fence right there caught the rider a nd bike and while not crashing, it put him back to where he was about 20 mph slower. It was a thrilling try and if it had worked, it would have been a mu ch more exciting climax. In the closing laps , McDaniels led the parade with ease with Barkman taking another Honda to second over Arnaiz , Ryan , Yamamoto and Filice. The Expert main got everyone buzz ing in anticipation of the start which went to Fay on yet another Honda . Brad Hurst went right to work with his methodical ways, but it was soon at an end when the primary chain gave up the cause. Fa y was getting the hard charge from Don Dodge, Campbell, Celorie and Word as Scott Pearson, the Re gional point lead er, was trying to get everything together but smacked the outside retaining wall. John Wincewicz was also having trouble and Mike Inderbitzen slid ou t on the downhill side . . Having started from the outside back row , the fastest rider moving through the pack was Tommy McCulloch on the Muzzy TT500. The former Junior high point winner here last year kept mixing things up until he made the pass on Dodge stick for second place behind the long.gone Fay . Dodge followed in front of Camp. bell , Word and Celorie. Results NOV MAIN : 1. Mark Rooks tHon); 2. Bill Scott (Yam); 3. Dale Hansen IYaml ; 4. Pat Seigle (Yam); 5. Mike Moritz (Yaml. JR MAIN: 1. Hurst's Triumph does at Clackamas n By Bill Spencer CLACKAMAS, OR,JULY II For the last 10 years . the summer fun always led to about a week of racing in the great Northwest but an uncooperative volcano laid waste to the Castle Rock track of the Mt. St. Helens M.C. , appropriately named for the eruptee. For those many thousands of us who like to spend some time up there, we will all have to wait until next year when the club rebuilds the track on the ash and mud aftermath. What was left for the racing world was the Sidewinders track just outside Portland and two good nights of racing on a hillside was en ough to give the IT fan the needed fix to get through until next year when the whole thing comes back to life . Novice heat races started out the racing night with adequate weather everywhere but around the race track. so after Bill Scott won the first heat from the penalty line. Ton Walton took the second with ease, Mark Rooks had another easy win . Bill Hollenbeclt bested the fourth and Bill Moritz the fifth, ref Mon Becker brought out the Expen heats as some light rain began to fall . Brad Hurst was in his usual position on the Jim Messler.prepped Triumph and ran off and hid for the win in front of Gary Davis and Bernie Larson. Jeff Celorie caught fire in the second event. winning a good one over Fra nk Word on a YZ 465 with John Wincewicz moving through the pack to capture third from a big crew. Butch Brown had purchased one of Hurst's bikes and took the third heat over 'Bria n Johnston and Ken Celorie while Billy Oliver and Don Dodge traded spots in the final heat with Dodge getting the nod. Once the Expen heats were over, the weather dutifuly turned nice and the show pro· ceeded smoothly. The four Junior heats were all thrillers with Jimbo Filice taking the Mert Lawwill-tuned 'Team - Yamaha TT500 to the forefront of the first heat only to quickly lose that spot to Jeff McDaniels, who really has his Honda XR500 dialed and the right lines for the track. Harry Thomas rode the Sonny Burres-tuned Triumph to the semi. In the second heat it was Brett Barkman and Rich Arnaiz dueling until Barkman fell and Rich got away from Don Montgomery. Rick Baptista and Arnie Wick had another good dice in the third heat with lots of trading off and Wick the winner. The last heat was flashy with Dave Ryan and Danny Atkinson doing the dury. The trophy dashes are as much fun as the mains around here and the Novice dash was indeed a thriller as Mark Rooks and Billy Scott had d one the psyche job on each other. Rooks took the stan and held a good line but at the checkered, Bill charged his S&S Racing, ND'sparked YZ around, under, over, etc., and took the win . Jeff McDaniels was on the pole for the Junior tr ophy dash but it was Arnaiz taking the Mike Macedo/ Arnaiz Construction TT500 to the WJn. In the Expen dash Brad Hurst was the pole sitter on the Panther-framed
