Messler/KRW Triumph with Frank Word do ing a credible job on the Yamaha Sports Center of Grants Pass YZ465 and Butch Brown and Billy Oliver. riding the George Herschbach/ OIy/Shoei-sponsored , Tiny-tuned Triumph rounding out the field . ' Bu tch got the low side for racing and took the lead while H urst tried to utilize every inch of the race track and made a good dash but lost the race by an inch at the checkered. Travis Babcock won the first No vice semi, mixing it up with Pat Seigle while Tony Cruckshank won the second over Randy Blankenship. jeff Campbell took the Expert semi after john W incewicz did a number on Tom McCullough and Bernie Larson. Crashes mixed the junior semis with Harry Thomas crashing and then winning the first while Randy Peterson took the second round and got the good sized crowd ready for the mains. Mark Rooks was the high point rider to date, and with three main events already under his belt , the fa vorite despite Bill Scott and Tom Walton. The 10 lapper was a thriller. Rooks had to work by Walton on the first lap with Scott getting by Babcock to third. Scott got underneath Walton and banged the fence coming up the front straight. Scott got to chasing Rooks ana banged the wall again . Rooks was out front bu t had to protect his lead with some fine blocking and despite the best pressure Scott could put on , Rooks took a fin e win with a standing ovation . . Arnaiz, Filice and McDaniels all rounded the corner about the same time in the junior final with McDaniels getting the better line on Filice . Dave Ryan , Randy Patterson. Dan Atkinson and mob hung together in the mounting dust while the front running three battled it out. Arnaiz had th e good early speed but it was McDaniels with the handling and the good lines. He made a pass stick at the bottom of the hill f or a fine win over Amaiz, Filice. Atkinson. Ryan , Patterson, Lew Alter and Ri ck Baptista. The Expert main is what the paying fan comes to watch and they got their money's worth one more time . The short sized track is entirel y surrounded by grandstands and they were mostly filled as the top 10 guys lined up for a 15 lap demolition derby. Danny "Magoo" Chandler sets his sights on lap ped riders at Auburn. ' Coming out of the hole with 10 guys going for a 90 degree left hander is sight just by itself, and Don Dodge was the early leader with Celorie, Brown, Davis . Hurst and Billy Oliver closely bunched in second. Hurst has a wa y about mentally riding this race track and rode through the crowd to take second and close on Dodge withi n five laps. ' He tried a pass on the outside up the front straight that had his mom a little scared and had to settle back for another try. Hum methodically got himself back about five bikelengths from Dodge and then started to dial in every pan of the race track so that he was cutting lap times right around the record and clearing a pa th so that when the time came, he could make his move . About th is time the red flag came out with a horrendous crash at the bottom of the hill . Gary Davis , Butch Brown. Brian johnston were all in a tangle and all was at a stop. Gary suffered rib and chest problems and was being watched closely the rest of the night as they had in line restart, Dodge and Hurst returned to . the same places and as the wh ite flag appeared , Hurst made his predictable move and passed Dodge for th e win and the plac e was in bedlam. The way he does it brings smil es to one and all. Results NOV MAIN: 1. Mark Rooks (Honl; 2. BillS cott (Y.ml; 3 . Tom Walton (Yam). JR. MAIN: 1. J eff MCO.n .... (Ho nl; 2. Rich Amaiz (Y.rnI; 3. Magoo smokes at Mammoth Bar MX open,r By M el W hite AUBURN, CA . JULY 13 The track at Mammoth Bar on the North Fork of the American .River near Auburn was re-opened for the first time in several years. It is a welcome addition to northern California motocross and most of the c riders will probably make a point of being back next time. The dashing water of the River retains the clarity of its high mountain origins as it cascad es between scenic canyon walls in a splendid setting that .seems an invitation to arrive early in order to simply enjoy the serenity of camping out in such a desi rable spot. In a 300 rider turn-out , the largest race was 31 Open Exp erts , In the first moto Randy Pockrandt (Ma i) managed to be first around the turn with George McNamara (Yam), Bob May (Mai) and Rick Woodson (Mai) behind him. Brian jodry (Suz) and Allen Berluti (Mai) were not much farther back and soon were challenging McNamara for second. jodry fell and moved back but by midrace McNamara moved into first place as Pockrandt stumbled back and gave battle to Berluti. Berluti finished in second with Pockrandt rhird andjodry again up into forth . The" second time out Jodry was clearly in front down th e sta n and around the turn but bailed off in the soft stuff and remounted lost in th e pa ck. Randy Losh (Hon) became th e leader with Pockrandt and Berluti in hot pursuit. The d istinctive t h ump of Losh 's four-stroke mount led every la p until he dumped it with only half a lap rem ai ning and had to settle fo r fourth at th e finish . Berluti was across first for th e overall win , jerome Heiberg er (C-A) had moved into second a nd Woodson managed to be th ird. Mike Raque (Yam) had the holeshot in both motos of th e 250cc No vice Division II class . jon Hill (Su z). however , was the runaway winner both times out. In moto one Kacy Killian (H us) was in for second, coming from a mediocre stan. In the second moto Gary Mahoney (Hon) followed Hill most of the way bu t was relegated to ' third at the finish line by jerry Geng (Kaw) who got past for second. .Allen Berluti (Mai) led moto on e of t he 250cc Experts from th e start with jerome Heiberger (C-A), Randy Chapman (Ma i) and George MeNamara (Yam) follow ing. Berluti appeared to have it in the bag and be cruising but bailed near the end of the rac e. giving the win to Heiberger. McNamara came in second with Berluti in third . The second time out Heiberger was out front at the stan with Berluti a close second going down the chute. Heiberger got around the turn in first but several other riders negotiated it better than Berluti who came ou t in fifth . Berluti was back in second at the finish line, however. behind only Hei berger who retained his leading posi tion all the way to the checkers. Randy Losh (Mai) was third . Dana Waxham (Suz) holeshot the I25cc Experts but Danny "MagOon Chandler, on a Honda. soon took over the lead and did not relinquish it . Bradley Harrison (Yam) took the holeshot in rnoto two with Mike Beier' (Yam ) and Ken McKenzie (Suz) tagging behind: Magoo was soon into second place but Harrison managed to stay in front for most of the race. In the end Magoo .was past the checkered flag first and Harrison was second. Beier. who had been aboard the third place bike throughout the moto, was edged out by McKenzie who successfully charged in to a photo-finish at the flag . Results 125 NOV DIV. I: 1.
