While not too m any visiti ng riders avail ed the mselves of the pra ctice, a ll of the Ba ro na regulars were on hand for a real fine regula r point race. As usu al , the Mini Experts feat ured the "T ita nic T ri o" of Lechien , Storer , and Dunla p with the "Raci n' Mac hine" Ronnie Lec hien ga rbbing a close one ove r "Storm in" Sam Storer in the Stocks, and Storer grabbing the Modifieds over Kenny Dunlap. The specia l 105cc Minis went to Lechien ove r Storer and Dunlap with some very close racing all the way. New Expert Mike Fish er ca me up with a third in th e Modifieds - a career high for him . Barona Oaks' 1980 Mini po int battle is now getting very tight as Lechien , Storer , and Du nlap a re wit h in about 70 points of each other. Interestingly , these top three riders are earnpaigning on three different m akes of machines ; Yamaha , Kawasaki and Su zuki, respectively. The 12-16 Intermediates Minis got a big transfusion in the form of Kurt Hendrickson and first timer R uss Winkler of Blythe, CA . Bot h were Yama ha- mounted, and they swapped firs ts and secon ds with Hendrickson goi ng two for two in the Modifieds, and Winkler taking a co me from be hind win in the Stocks . The 9-11 Intermed ia tes fea tured the usu al ba ttle be· tween Fra nkie Bru n dage a nd j oh n Conney with Brundage (Suz) grab b ing the Modifieds , a nd Conney (Ya m) tak ing a come from behind victory in the Stocks. T he Motorcycle classes p roduced the biggest upset of t he day wit h Steve H it t taking bot h 125cc Expert classes: the Stocks ove r Tim H ale and th e Modifieds over Scott Swift , as pe rennial winner David McGhee cou ld not ge t on track all day. The wildest win of the day was Larry Bu tler' s Intermediate I25cc Stock win as he parlayed a 4-2 effort to a win over Arni Le mon (2-5) a nd Guy Schmidt ( 1-6). Don Seay was a close fourth at 7-11 In the Novices. Al b a Honda ri der Roger Hayes too k a tie-breaker Stock 125cc win over Alex Leon a nd then Su zuki rider Leon came back strong for the Modified win over Indio Su zu ki rider j im Pearson.
