La rry Da shiell (Ma i) ran away wit h the first mota of th e 250cc Experts , lead in g every la p fr om first to last. Steve Vic ke rs (Ha n) was in seco nd place for the first half of the 30-m inutep lus-one-la p mota and then he bega n to drop back . Bill O 'D onnell (Han) took over t he runner-up spot a nd ca m e ac ross th e fini sh line a strong seco nd . Ken Palm er (Mai) finished a tarnish ed third , being led across by a n Amat eur rid ing a 125cc m achine . Palmer d id not allow a re pea t of the hu m iliation in mota two. He got past both Da sh iell and Vic kers 10 ta ke first place. O 'D onnell came from a first lap crash to finish seco nd, o nly a wheel ahead of Dashiell in t hird . Ma rk Pierre ( Ma i) was the ea rly leader of m ot a o ne of th e 250cc Novices but he -DNF. T he lead then went 10 J ohn Pa pol a (Suz) who held it for m ore tha n half th e race des pi te the cha lle nge from Scan Mer row (Han) rig ht beh ind him. Once he got by, Merrow m oved out a hea d to ta ke the c hec ke red flag in a secure first p lace. . Ken Grey (Mai) moved up fro m a mediocre start 10 fin ish second . Pa pola was third. Mer row had th e h o lesho i in m o ta two and led every la p except the final one . J ohn Decarly (Suz) began the rnot o seco nd. dro pped to last and then climbed a ll th e way back up 10 ta ke . fir st a t th e final flag . 125cc Nov ices R ick Feigel (Suz). Tony Lam pert i (Han) and Mike Stirl ing (Suz) put o n th e kind of close exciting race t ha t leaves the spectators ex ha usted at the end as well as the riders. The first time out La m perti had th e initia l lead but very soo n Feigel rook it and kept it all the way. Sti rling stayed behind Feigel for seco nd a nd Lam pe rt i had to serrle for thi rd. In the seco nd m oto , Larnper ti again took th e lead and this time refused to reli nq uis h it. For the entire mota the three bik es of Lam pert i, Feigel and Sti rling formed a cl uster that ne ither b rok e apart nor crashed toget her but m oved suspenseful ly. yet ski llfu lly. ahead of a ll the o the rs . That was Roy Davis' qu estion a fte r winning the 125cc Pro class and also afte r he had been passed by Craig Prause. Pr a use was the o nly Open Pro rider so he started wit h the 25 0cc Pros who sta rted abou t 30 seco nds be hind t he 125s'a nd it a ll started at the Sixes Motocross T rack. Six mi les no rth of Port Orford and a cou ple miles eas t of th e Paci fic Ocea n lies Sixes, O R , a nd the Sixes Motocross track . T he track itself lies nestled .in a small openi ng of Sho re Pin e. Azal eas and ferns . Newcomers are mos t likely going to be disappointed with th eir first view of the track as they d rive into the faci lities beca use the track looks so sma ll. In fact : th e entire o pe n ing must cover only two or three ac res. Bu t after a brisk walk arou nd th e .8m ile t rac k , th ese same newco mers sta rt ge tting exc ited . T he tra ck co n ta ins: 12 co rners , so me a rc fla t , some ha ve nice berms ; fo u r j um ps. o ne of which will send you flying th rou gh the ai r straight a nd true for over 30 feel a nd , even thou gh it d oesn't look like it . two fa irly lo ng stra ig ht aw ays. One ended ·up o n Cra ig Prause's colla rbo ne which raised a nice litt le re d lump a nd th e o ther rock was never actua lly seen so it was discounted as a rumor. Elmer Reim er , the Sixes m o torcycle club motocross spokesman , was out ea rly Sunday morning with his wa ter tr uck soaking down the track. Bu t Elmer". 1946 water truck got stuck in re verse so he backed it off the track and pa rked it. Natura lly there were. those who linked the transmission problems to the Sachs sticker th at was on the windshield of the old tru ck . Because of the wat er shortage , it was d ecided 10 only run two motos instea d of th e usu al three . The composit ion of the dirt is suc h that when wet . it gives unbelieva ble trac tion , but when dry it is unbelievably dusty. And to think that the whol e Pacific O cean.is only a few mil es away! Four 125cc Pros lin ed up behind the m et a l sta rt ing ga te and when it dropped , Roy Davis was first over it a n d to t he first turn . Behind Davis was St a n Robert s. Rick Sm ith a nd Fra nk H inds. Ab ou t 30 seco nds la ter the three 250cc Pr os a long wit h Prause in the Open class wer e turned loose . Prause's 170cc adva n tage sho wed as he too k the lead over th e 250s a nd sta rted m oving up to wards t he 125s. Behind Pra use and firs t 250 was Ti m Sti llion with C hris Alberts and Rod Hu ffm a n - following . Davis continued 10 take his Yam aha fu rther in front of the o the r 125s . Davis was rid ing incredibly fast. bou ncing ove r the ro ugh whoops and yet look ing to be in co m plete co ntrol. Prause , 100, was wo rking th e track ove r and by the . ha lfway mark had passed the second -p lace 125 whi ch was sti ll St a n Ro bert s. Mea nwhil e . th ere were two good battles go ing on around th e track . One was betw een Ri ck Sm ith a nd Frank H inds. After excha ngi ng th ird and fourth places several times. Smith fin ally pull ed h is Ya m a ha round H inds' " Kwa ker. " They co nt inue d to battle up 10 two la ps 10 go a nd it looked like Hinds was go ing to pu t on h is last -ch ance drive when h is Kawasaki sudde n ly seized . H in ds was understandab ly upset and he let his steed drop in the b ush es. H is pit crew ca me ru nning with a ca n of gas but it wasn't to be that sim ple. The other ba tt le was betw een C hris Alb ert a nd Rod Huffm an . This was on ly Hu ffm an's second race sin ce bad crash two m onths ea rl ier. Albert fina lly got by H uffman for good and t he order was T im Stillio n, Alb ert a nd Hu ffm an . 1n the 125cc class , t he o rde r was Da vis. Ro berts and Sm ith . Pra use had passed everyone but Davis. Later in the pits , Prause com me nted tha t he ha d lost a bus hi ng in his UniT rak and that he had had quite a bumpy ride . H in ds had no rea son fo r his Ka wasak i seizing co m me nting th a t th is was onl y his th ird ra ce on the m achine . As t he Pros lin cd up for th e seco nd m oro , th ere was a st rong win d blowing and th e trac k was sta rti ng 10 ge t d ust y. Davis o nce again go t the holeshot and had a lrea dy mad e th e rig ht -hand first t urn wh en Stan Roberts got his front wheel tangled with Rick Smith's rear wheel and went d own . Robert s got up immediately. but was ho ldi ng his ha nd . Sm ith co nt inue d o n in sec ond with H inds, on his sp are H ond a , in close purs u it. The 250 s lef t th e gate with Prause once again tak ing th e big, m ean green m ach ine int o th e first tum first. Alberts , Stillion and Huffman followed Pra use onto th e track , Pra use q u ickl y ca ug ht up with the 125s. C ra ig rea lly looked like he was a
