J UNE 20 With the regiona l only a week awa y, several riders were on hand for their last chance to d ial in the tri cky Sidewinders TT cou rse. An expected Novice showdown be twee n Cal ifornia 's Bill Sc ott . the W est ern Region po int leader. and Clackamas poin t leader Mark Roo ks of Washingt on never ha d a cha n ce to materia lize . As Rooks to ok the week off, this left Scott as th e favo ri te . Wi th four hea ts of Novices , it wouldn't be easy. H eat one was all Scott as he b reezed to the fa st heat of th e night at 1:32 .48 . The second tr ansfer went to Mark Wil1iaman who made a nifty last la p pass on Pat Seig le . T erry Sea l toak a wire-to-wire win in heat two and Randy Blakenship to ok the other transfe r. Heat three was a battle from the start between Travis Babcock a nd . Darren Arnold , Babcock was abl e to hold on for th e win with a fin e time of 1:32 .84 . Mark Brunner took Babcock 's spot in th e main . When t hey were off, it was all Scott's ra ce from the sta rt wit h th e pack in tow. As Scott len gthened his lead the b a tt le was for second b e tween Cain and Wil1iaman . Cain held on with Williaman thi rd. A bat tle was a lso goi ng o n fo r fou rth between Seal, Seigle a nd Schnitze r. Schnitzer ove rt ook both but went wid e in the final co rner a nd lost them. The fina l tally was Scott, Ca in , Williaman . Sea l and Se igle . After Junior time trials , it looked like it would be a fast Jun ior program. W ith J eff McDaniel looking sm oo th setting th e fast time at 14.88 , he , looked as if he 'd be the one to beat. Also on hand was W estern Region J unior point leader Rich Arnaiz of Cal ifo rn ia who is fast anywhere. The firs t heat was underway with Debbie Saenz in the lead a nd Mc Daniel hot on her heels as they started . to wards the downhill . Saenz sp un out and the red flag ca me out. Saenz was u ninju red b ut out for the night. Mc Daniel took th e lead on the re o start and wasn't to be denied with the fast heat at I :30 .40. Harry Thomas took the other transfer. R ich Batista was off and took the seco nd hea t win with Br ent Barkman, d espite a b ad start , a b le to work up to the final transfer on th e Rob Mu zzy . 465 Yamaha. The th ird hea t was all Arna iz as he loo ke d su pe r smooth with another good tim e of I :30. 55.· T he seco nd transfer wen t to Br ian Doland . Randy Patte rson took the fina l hea t wire to wire over J im Rosa . T he st age was now set fo r the M a in a nd it look ed to be a ba ttle be tween McD aniel a nd Arna iz as t hey we re the first two out of the co rner. Pa tt e rso n a nd Ba tist a were three a nd four. McD aniel held o n with Arnaiz right there . Coming d own the downhill on la p two whe n Arnaiz d ro ve it a little too ha rd and al m ost we nt ove r t he high side. McDaniel wa s now working on a goo d lea d as Arnaiz had lost second to Patterson . T he final res ult was McD a niel , Patterson , Arnaiz , Batista a nd Barkman . A lot of cre dit has to go to Brad Hurst wh o m ade th e p rogram despi te the passing of his father ea rly in th e week a nd m issin g time tri a ls because of m echanical problems. Fa st time was set b y Mike Su llivan a t 14,80 fo llowed closely by Don Dodge and Bill O lvier a t 14.82 a nd 14 .86 re spectively . The final rider to qual ify, . Ga ry Davis , crashe d the to p four a nd m ade th e Trop hy Dash . T he first Expert heat was all Gary Dav is as th e Pepsi-sp onsored rider look ed very sm oot h a nd would be a force in the Main. The second a nd thi rd transfers went to Bob Moran a nd Mike Sulliva n . The second heat sa w Brad Hurst . despite ha ving th e poo r spot on t he outs ide , able to work his way into t he lea d o n lap o ne . H e was not to be d enied des p ite ea rly p ressure fro m Don Dodge.Trodge held on for second a nd Randy Scott was able to work u p to th e thi rd a nd fina l transfe r. Bill Olvier took the Semi win over Bernie Larson . Jeff Campbell was third and the final transfer we nt to Rich Word , Don Dodge took the Expert Trop hy Dash over Davis. On the start of th e Main event , it was Hurst and Davis out in front with Campbell in third , Hurst and Davis had a good race up front , Dodge was p utting lots of pressure on Campbe ll and fina lly got by him on lap fou r. H urst had now gone out by himself and Dodge was pressuring Davis. Dod g e made th e pass on Davis on lap seven . Campbell was now pressured by Scott who had been working his wa y through traffic . but things stayed th e same to th e chec ke red: Hurst , Dodge , Davis. Campbell and Scott .
