CA .jUNE 22 Carlsbad may have garnered the European and N ational motocross stars on J une 22 but Saddleback Park had the likes of Bru ce r 32 • McDougal. j im Tarantino and Eric MacCracken . Bruce McDougal , aboard a Honda out of Escondido Honda. put th e Yamahas and Suzukis to the test in t he 125cc Pro class. Throughout the fir st moto he fought tooth and nail with Rick jackson. j ackson (Yam) managed to hold McDouga l to second throughout most of th e rac e . leaving McD ou gal figh ting to hold off the ad vances of fellow Honda rid er Rodney H ug hes , riding for Bike Cit y. T he seco nd time out foun d a rematch between Jackson and McDouga l. Mer e inc hes se p a r a te d th ese ' two throughou t the race. Wh en lapped traf£1C slowed Jackson••McDougal took, over command and pulled out int o a respectable lead. Dave Eropkin, aboard a Suzuki. was locked into a wheel-to whee! due! with Hughes for third and held him off to the end. ' When the checkered flag brought them home. McDougal pic ked up top dollar for the day . second place loot went to Jackson and third overall to Hughes. Jim Tarantino, rid in g a Honda for DG , simply walked awa y with t he 250cc Pro win, scorin g a pair of home runs that cou ld not be sto pped , T hroughout the fir st moto he found heavy traffic on his tail with Honda mounted Bryan Maloney in second a nd An dy Orescanin aboa rd a Kawa saki in third . The second time off the line Mal on ey was there again . to hound a nd pursue T a ra ntino th rough every berm and over each jump. Orescanin , was hot on th e heels of Mall Devich and T a ra ntino had to fig ht for his lead. Orescanin broke down a nd left the feud to Devich in seco nd . Maloney in th ird and Chuck Lunde rou nd ing out the top four. When the fin ish line ca me into view , Ta rantino led the wa y for back -to-back wins , Maloney ended up in the second overall slot with th ird place money going to Devich . Eric MacCracken and his Yamaha put on a brilliant performance in the Open Pro ra ce . Throughout both rnotos, MacCracken was hounded by Steve Blazek. Blazek had everyone rrackside with a start that set him out in front of everyone. With Blazek on a Suzuki, the two racers encircled th e track with a blaze of go ld . The end of the first moto saw MacCrack en cross ove r in command with Bla zek holding second . The second time a round was Blazek 's d ownfall. An ailin g bik e sid elined th e racer , sendin g Blazek back to t he pits a nd leaving Ma cCracke n fre e and flying . If the P ros tasted vict or y, th e Sportsmen had more than t heir sha re . Mickey Dym ond burned u p the track on a Honda for Fast Lane Ra cing . He • ended up in th e winner's cicc~ fo 125cc Intermediates with a 1·2 score. CA , J U N E 20 It was J eff Edwards (Suz) who topped an exciting four-way duel at Corona Racwa y to rake in the cash in the 125cc Pro race. In recent weeks the small bore class has been getting bigger and bigger a t Corona , u nt il finally it to pped the 250cc class in both num bers and action . At the sta rt of mota on e , Tim Hines (Yam) jumped into th e lead . Right on his tail was Andy No rt hru p (Han) for abou t a ha lf la p . th en North rup took th e lead and Mike Edson ca me up fro m the rea r to push for seco nd . Ed wa rds . in th e meantim e . was ba ck in fourth looking for an opening. They " if Irr;! .l j _ IQ'It. {qr.i r\V.1.apf.lb~ Eds on moved into second and started looking for a way into th e lead , Un fort u na tely he went down before he beca me a seri ous threat , whil e at the sa me time Edwards moved past Hines into second . From t he re on in it was a two wa y way ra ce with Edwards hanging fr om Northrup's rear fender all the way to the finish. Hines went d own in the final laps and took Edson with him , but he managed 10 hang on 10 fourth behind Warren Bell (Suz ). Rounding out th e top five was Ryan Eid e (Suz). who had come up from a poor sta rt. In th e next moto , Eide was ready to make up for his last start and he pushed himself into the lead , Edwa rds was right behind him it} second with Northrup in tow . Eide managed to pull a slight lead by the halfway point while Northrup and Edwards rode wheel to wheel, with Edward holding on ly a slig ht edge , It was on the eight h la p that Eide got a little out of shape. which was all Edwards and Northrup needed to shoot by. As they came into the last la p , the three of them were still battling it out. Edwards was barely on top. but then Northrup went down and allowed Eide 10 repass him . That m ade it easier for Edwards to take the win by a few seconds over Eide, Northrup and Edson . who was the one to make up for a poor start this time. O vera ll, it read Edwards. Northrup . Eide , Hines and Bell. T he 250cc Pro class went to Rick Maki (Yam) . who won both 'motos. Don Griewe led the first round after . passing Mark Ba rn es (Yam) . bu r ran out of gas. giving it · to Maki . Keith , Williamson (Yam) was second over Ba rn es and Chris Tarvin (Hon) . Wil liamson led much of ro und two. bu t Maki made the pass at the halfway mark , .G riewe was in third . bu t he too managed to get by Williamson. O ver all. however.
