Time Trials The top 10 qualifiers ran within three-tenths of a second of ea ch other, with 1979 Grand National Champion Steve Eklund taking the run of the day with a 24.893. Eklund was on e of th e last racers to arrive at the event, unloadin g his bikes just before practice began and most riders were through inspection. "1 don't know wh y I'm late - I just ran out of time, " Eklund said as he pulled his ZanottilCastrollinterpart X R750 Harley out of his van. Terry Poovey took runner·up honors with a 24 .9 14, and HarleyDavidson-sponsored Ra ndy Goss fol lowed with a 24 .931. Billyl Schaeffer was next with 24.958 , and Garth Brow came in at 24.964. The 48th qualifier , John Wincewicz, ran a 25.936. Mo rehead had thought he had the race in the bag, but H an k Sco tt pulled out the stops on the 12t h lap to cla im the front -runner position for good . " I was just trying to be like a ballet dancer - to be as smooth and consistent as I can . When you bobble , you lose time. I had to come from th e third row to do it . too ," Hank Scott sa id in victory circle . Riders wer e anxious in heat one and the start was ju m ped twice before th e race got underway. Honda -sponsored J eff Haney was on e of th e riders sent to the penalty line , and when t he sta rt d id go off Haney was waving his arm , tryin g to hold th in gs up until he was ready. T he pack was gone , a nd Haney was left a t th e line. The first time around Ted Boody took his Am i Helmets-sponsored Harley int o th e lead, but the race was yellowflagged , and another sta rt was called. Billy Labrie had low-sided in turn four and slid under the bike . Eklund clipped him on an outside line. Labrie walked away from the crash: • Boody jammed into the lead at the restart, but Gary Scott put his J ack Sisemore/KK Motorcycle Supply XR750 on Boody's rear tire and pushed until he saw an inside line by on lap nine . Ekl und followed Scott and slipped into second, but Boody got him back on the inside in corner three on the last lap . Labrie ran a steady fourth, but couldn't break int o a transfer spot.
