TEN YEARS AGO ; • • ~ t o 00 0') ...... The East/West motocross challenge concluded with the second round held at Ba y Mare . Smarting from the previous week's one-point loss, the West team roared back and took the first four places in each rn oto , led each time by Greeves-rnounted team captain Jim Wilson. John DeSoto, Jim West and John Rice were also among the West's top scorers . Canadian Dave Sehl (H ·D) was the winner of the Louisville half mile National , topping early leader Cal R a ybor n (H ·D) and Larry Palmgren (Tri). Triumph-mounted Maurice Fraser took the supporting Amateur show . In the Grand National Seri es points sta nd ings, Dick Mann still led with 249 , followed by Jim Rice )217) and Dave Aldana (205). Russ Sanford, president of Motorcycle Owners, R iders and Enthusiasts , was selected by the U.S . Secretary of Agriculture to serve on the Advisory Council for the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. Although th e Canada-toMexico trail was for hiking and equestrian use only, Sanford was appointed to represent the interests of vehicle users on th e public lands the trail crossed. Suzuki's Joel Roben managed to pull a four- point lead in the 250cc World MX Championship point standings over teammate Sylvain Geboen. Robert and Geboers split moro wins in the Italian round, with Joel coming out on top with a 1·2 to Sylvain's 3·1. R oger DeCc»ter (CZ) was second in the first moto; Torlief H ansen (Hus) rounded out the top three in the final round . In 500cc MXGP action in Sweden, Christer Hammagren took his first 'G P win after Bengt Aberg and Arne Kring cr ashed while battling for the lead. All t hree were Swedish and rode Husqvamas . Still another Swede, Ake Jonsson (Ma i), pla ced second overall. Steve Nichols, Greg Wickam, Rob Morrison, Scott Smith, Steve Thomas, Phil McDonald, Scott Autrey and Fred Timberlake all took main event wins in a night of short track a nd TT raci ng at O range County Speedw ay. In late-breaking news fro m across th e pond. Malcolm Uphill won the Isle of Man 750cc Product ion race on a T riumph T riden t. Uphill won after a thrilling last lap battle with Norton rider Peter Williams, and the m argin of victory was a razor thin 1.6 seconds! The 500cc race was won by F . Whiteway on a Suzuki tw in . Tom Rockwood (Tri) contin ued his domination of Ascot's weekl y half mil e , besting DeWayne Keeter (Nor) in th e Expert main event. Don E mde (BSA ) won the Amateur final, where Iowa's Lynn Holloway had qualified riding an ancient Velo 500 : Gary Scott (Yam) won the Novice race. Remember when . .. ? 5
