heat two, never to be headed with Klotz/Wiseco/ AMF Harley-sponsored Scott Parker in tow , Noot Irvin was in third on his Tilly Harley' Da vidson , but Terry Poovey came blasting by in corners three and four on lap four on a low line for third . He then proceeded to hound Parker to the checkers, and only fell short by two feet at the finish. Parker was using the high line with Poovey underneath . "The bike was working good and 1 like riding on high lines , so I stayed up there as long as I could - it was close ," said Parker. Ronn ie Jones , on his R&B H·D/ Viper Racing Harley, took the lead in heat three but gave it up on lap two when Ricky Graham on his Klotz/ Wiseco/JB Racing/ T ex Peel/Self/ AMF H·D got by wi th Hank Scott behind. Then the red flag ca me out. A spec, tator lay on the track after turn four. and David Jones, brother of R on nie , lay about 30 yards fart her down the line. Ambulance crews were on the scene when another spectator came over the fence . An inst a nt later a ruckus occ urred between th e,spectator and racer Dewa yne Howton . "Tha t crazy guy wasn' t but 10 feet in front of me - I likely hit him after David did! I don't think he (Jones) even had time to blip the throttle. Then another guy was over the fence. I told him three times to go back over, and when he didn't I cold conked hirnl" The ' crowd was hot , but racing got back underway and things settled down a bit. Willie Crabbe took the restart lead position and battled with Graham. Graham took the lead, but later pulled out of contention. Hank Scott came through to the front with Randy Goss following in a tight ra ce to the checkered flag . Crabbe followed in third. Heat four had a hard time getting off the line with half the field sent to the penalty line and the red flags coming out after the start did go off. Steve Morehead on a Horton Cornperition/ KK Motorcycle Su pp ly Harley, Scott Pearson and Mike Kidd ran one, two , three at the restart . Morehead was never hea ded . and Kidd moved into second on lap seven. Billy Schaeffer claimed third over Scott Drake by 10 feet. - Semis Bill Labrie took Tommy Du m a in tow at the start of semi one. Rob Crab be chased in thi rd and got tight with Duma , but couldn't close th e gap . Labrie took a transfer with Duma a distance back. It was Scott Pearson all the way in semi two with Alex J orgensen . points leader going into the round, in second. Jorgensen took it within a wheel length at the finish , but couldn't get the edge. Keith Ulicki couldn't set up a challenging position and ran in third. Trophy Race Tommy Duma jumped ahead of Noot Irvin , Bu bba R ush and Terry Wolf. Irvin moved to first , and Keith Ulicki joined the battle and took an outside line to second in turn four on lap six ., Ulicki went low on lap 10 and took his last chance to get Irvin , b u t almost lost it and let Du m a back by . Rob Crabbe, Garth Brow and Bu bb a R ush followed . "I thought Du m a was behind me and then he ' dropped back so I just paced myself - Ulicki just sort of snuc k up on me ." said. Irvin , National Terry Poovey didn't make the line for t he Nationa l, d ue to a fa ulty wrist pin that was discovered when warming the bike up minutes before the start. Crabbe, Morehead, Gary Scott, Hank Scott and Mike Kidd hooked u p and went to the front. By lap two Hank Scott had flopped posi tions with Morehead, Hank to second and Steve to fourth. Then it was Morehead's turn to lead. He ran to the front on lap three, bringing Crabbe and Gary Scott with him. O n lap five Hank Scott went inside to regain second, and Crabbe picked up his pace to hol d third. Morehead and Hank Scott began pulling away from the pack, testing each other's reflexes and nerves . A distance back Gary Scott, Crabbe, Boody and Kidd had a game of followthe- leader going. Boo dy found a way past Crabbe on lap nine for fourth. Kidd dropped back and Keener and Schaeffer got in the game in sixth and seventh. On lap 12 Hank Scott took an inside line past Morehead in turn one for the lead. Morehad kept close . Be hind the dueling duo Boody and Gary Scott were going a t it followed by Crabbe. The field started spreading out and before things got out of range Gary Scott moved on Bood y a nd grabbed third . Keener held a stable fifth, and a disagreement was goi ng on between Crab be and Schaeffer over sixth. Crabbe got the position. but Labrie moved past Schaeffer for the seventh slot. Eklund was running at the back of the pack , uncompetitive after his fast time of the day and strong hea t race showing. Ha nk Scott. Morehead , Gary Scott, Bood y. Keener . Crabbe, Labrie and Schaeffer saw the checkers in that order. Hank Scott picked up a new track record along with his wm with a time of eight minutes, 26.408 seconds and an average speed of 71.089 miles per hour. The former record was held by Jay Springsteen, set during last year's race with a time of eight minutes , 32.187 seconds. "T h ree for Ohiol Ohio one, two . three!" shouted Morehead in winner's circle concerning the homestate status of the three top finishers. better than Steve " I' m no (Morehead) or Ekl und or anyone," said Hank Scott. "I just have to thank Christ - I've never done this well before ea rly in a season ." "I was having tro u ble hoo king u p on the back st raight - I was spinning more than Hank," said Morehead . I thought I ha d it in th e b ag, bu t that's . the way it is on a groove tr a ck. Hank and I Jet Ski and trail ride together during the week . " It makes me sick to my stomach about David jones' death. We're trying to fight the black leather jacket motorcycle image, and then one of those guys jumps onto the track and a drastic thing like this ha ppens," said Morehead . "H a nk sort of got me flustered when he passed me," Gary Scott said. "Then Boody got by for a second , and I knew it was time to pick up my pace - third is better than fourth, so I moved. " "There should have been better crowd control. " said Hank Scott. They've always had a crowd problem here.
