Zitterkopf, MacCracken, and Kehoe at DeAnza D-37MX By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD,CA,MAY18 Greg Zitterkopf made it two wins in a row by taking the AMA District 37 250cc Pro class at DeAnza Cycle Park. It was one of the hot- 24 test days so far this year, but that didn't stop Zitterkopf from putting in a strong 2-1 finish to take top honors . . Moto one belonged to Eric MacCracken (Yam) who spent . three laps following Mark Ba rn es (Yam) before ta king the lead. Zitterkopf had his work cut out for him right from the start as he rounded the first lap in ninth place, but he picked off riders every lap to p ut himself in fourth by the halfway point. It took him five laps aft that to move into the number two spot, where he eventually finished. MacCracken crossed the finish line with a healthy lead while Zitt erkopf held off Fred Combs (Kaw) , David Bekling (Yam) and Jon Frieson (C-A). In round two, MacCracken bailed off on the first lap while David Petti grew (Kaw) moved into the lad. Zitterkopf moved into second by lap four and then the battle started. Pettigrew didn't want to give up the lead and for seven laps they were elbow to elbow in the turns and down the straights. Zitterkopf finally took over and took it home while Pettigrew fell back to third behind Combs. Overall it was Zitter kopf, Com bs, MacCraken, who managed to get fourth in the second bou t, Bekling and Pettigr ew. Erik Kehoe (Yam) was the ' ha nds down win ner in the 125cc Pro class, taking both rnotos after passing early leader Varney Holbrook (Suz). In moto one, Rick Jackson (Yam) go t a poor start, but knifed his way th rou gh th e pack to eventually finish second over Ho lbrook. In the next moto, however, Holbrook hd dJackson off all the way to the end for second place cash. Eric Ma cCracken dominated the Open Pro class so thoroughly that the race was almost boring. He was on top of every lap of both motos with Rob Tolleson (Yam) in second and Eddie Michetti (C -A) in third. In the Open Intermediate class , Ken Campbell rode the same Can-Am that took Michetti to third Pro and, with no experience on machinery bigger than a 125cc , he took the win . Moto one saw him take over after Rollie Smith (Hus) and Alan Thompson (Ka w) both crashed. Frank Said (Mai) made a late charge but had to be satisfied with second. Race two saw Campbell lead every lap with Said.coming in second once more ahead of Don Gossett (Mai). Results PEE WEE: 1. Mark Hoop ingarner (Suzl; 2. Eddie Rosalesgi ISuzl ; 3. Bobby David lSuzl. Zitterkopf, Dale take Corona purse By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA , MAY 16 Greg Zitterkopf and his Crown Cycle Ma ico topped the 250cc Pro class at Corona Raceway last Friday night, ta king the lion's share of the $1000 purse. In th e 125cc wars it was Craig Dale (Hon) taking Craig Dale )81and Rick Maki battled it out at Corona. top money after some hot dicing with Rick Maki (Yam). Zitterkopfs win in the 250cc class was hardly routine. He was the only . rider to muster any consistency at all in a ra ce that was more like a demoli tion derby than a motocross, with four of the top five riders suffering mechanical difficulties. Juan Benavidez (C-A) was definitely the fastest rider on the track in both motos , but a flat tire put him out of action wh ile leading round on e and ,gave the lead to Redlands Suzuki's Marty Miller. On the same lap Scott Johnson dropped out of the race after moving into second place. This gave the number two spot to Zit· terkopf, who had just passed Andy Orescanin (Kaw) . But Orescanin was back on top of the Maico pilot on the next lap and Steve Bauer (Hon) was coming on strong from the rear, challenging both of them. It was on the very last lap that Bauer put the pass on the two of t hem to take second place behind Miller. The next round was downright crazy. Miller led most of it with Ba uer hot on his tail and Benavidez elbowing his way through the pack after a poor start. But on the sixth lap Miller's bike broke and this gave the lead to Bauer . . . briefly. Bauer dropped out a few turns la ter with bike troubles also . This put Benavidez in front, but because of his first moto DNF. he was out of the run ning for the money. Andy Northrup , who got seventh in round one, was in second with Zitterkopf not too far behind. They finished in that order and because Orescanin was also on the second moto DNF list , Zitterkopf had the best score. Northrup was next in line with Andy Jefferson and his 8-4 score taking the third spot ahead of Phil T horstensen (Yam) who went 12- 6. Dale's win in the 125cc Pro class was almost as exci ting. In round one Dale passed bot h Scott Manning (Ya m) a nd Bren t Blou nt (Yam) to ta ke the lead, bu t was then passed by Mak i. Maki went on to ta ke the win . In the ne xt race, Maki had tro ub le on the first lap, whic h put Dal e in the clea r to lea d the whole ra ce. Ma ki even tually worked his way u p into secon d, but the overall was still Dale's. T hird went to Rocket Rex Enterprises' rider Jerry Raymer (Ya m). Results MINI BEG: 1. David Roach; 2. Jim German ' 3. Ron Williams. . MINI NOV: 1. Joe Rinco n IKaw) ; 2. Dan Hovis IVam ); 3. Not only did we. have two l O-lap motos , but added to this was a shootout between us and the Over The Hill Gang. The top four riders of each class competed against each other. This shootout was lots of fun. Our thanks to Ed Michetti, DeAnza operator and O ld Timers Master. . . Ma~ters started with Marshall Jennmgs m command of the show bu t on lap four , "Movi n' Marv" O lsen took over and went on to victory. Blackie Lewis came in second and J ennings placed third. Blackie was rea lly out th ere in moto two with the holeshot a nd all, and he kep t this u p un til lap eigh t a t which time he was overpowered by Olsen who went on to first. Jenni ngs came throug h on lap nine and from th en on controlled ' second place. Third place was won by Blackie. Expert T om Wid ick gave us a good d em onstra tion of power as he took over on lap four and made it first at the finish line. T here for secon d place was Don Jensen, and Bob Berdyk put his CZ into a winning line to claim third place. Widick shot th rough the pack to wrap up first place in the second moto.
