MAY 24·26 Getting in his third motocross special test before rain severely slickened the surface , Ed Lojak recovered from a 35-point (second) deficit to post low score at the Trask Mountain M.e. Three-Day ISDT Qualifier. Kawasaki captured th e two sma llbore classes as Mark Hyde beat team mate Jack Penton by four points in the 175cc ranks, Dane Leimbach spent three days breaking trail and won the l25cc Qualifier class. Day three was marked by the con rro versia l fift h chec k . near the end of the loop . R id ers. who had been hitting checks early all w.eekend. often by as much as 25 ·50 rnmutes , found them selves late. T he problem was com pounded by a turn in which the tra il going away 'from the co urse looked to be the right way . In the en d. the referee agreed that the marking could hav e been vague. and he extended the time between the checks by four minutes . This left most of the fast riders free of route points. but not all . Can' Am's John Martin. who had gotten lost and was eight minutes past his grace . filed a protest asking that the chec k be thrown out altogether.
