According to the AMA 's Hugh Fleming, the appeals board could: ( I) Uphold the referee; (2) uphold Martin's protest; or (3) reverse the referee's adjustment of the times an d have th e check stand as originally sco red. Should the last decision be reached . Ayers would wind up with the low score, because he was one of the few rid ers to get to th e check still on his grace. . Day One "T hey're giving us back the time we need ed last year ," qui pped Dane Leimbach at the end of the day. Husky's Frank Gallo retired on the first day when he lost a countersh a ft sprocket . T he special tests consisted of an acc elera tion test each morning and six -lap motocross hea ts a t the end of ea ch da y, run on th e normal Mulkey ORV Pa rk MX circu it. The start, fini sh and impound were a lso at Mulkey. The cou rse was dam p a fte r a few da ys of rain . but it dried out during the co urse of th e racing, becoming progressively faster. The I25cc machines and a few 175s were in the first heat, and Dane Leimbach was easily the fastest in the eigh th -Iiter class, .chasing I75cc Yamaha rider Ron Ribolzi to the finish . KTM's Rod Bush was the fastest of the I7 5cc class . riding in one of its later heats and ba ttling for the lead with 250cc classer Jeff Fr edette despite the loss of his rear brake on lap one. T eam Green members Penton and Mark Hyde ran 2·3 to Bush at th e end oftheday. Lojak was one of the last 250cc rides to take a shot at the course, and he ran away with h is ra ce to set fast time in the class. Ted Leimbach (Kaw) and John Martin , earlier heat winners . trailed . Lojak's fast time lasted only until Yamaha teamsters Jim Fishback and Larry Ro eseler got out on the track. Fishback looked like he would run away with it , getting 14 seconds ahead of Roeseler, who was bothered by detonation and a poor start. Roeseler managed to make up half the distance before th e flag , however. Fishback's " six laps were 21 seconds faster than Lojak's, Ayers was a couple of heats la ter. and he ran awa y with th e heat to wind up th ree seconds ahead of Fishback. - - - - -- - IAbove) Class winners Mark Hyde 1208) and Dane Leimbach 11001 lead their MX t est-IBelowl J eff Hill wonders what he's getting himself into. The schedule was tightened up slightly, but most riders were still hitting the checks with lots of time to spare. Roeseler, who had ch anged jetting at the beginning of the d ay to try and fix th e detonation, had enough tim e at check three to work on the electrical system and change the m ain jet ag ain.
