da- Northern Californ ia-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-ldaho-Utah·Alask on his rea r fender until he fell in a muddy spot during the fourth lap. H e retained second place, but it gave Schlag a IO-second lead. Three laps later , Wood had m ad e up that lost time and was back on Schlag's fender. Sch lag stepped up th e pace a bit and it was a hea vy ra ce th e whol e way, with Schlag in front by a me re 20 feet at th e chec kered fla g. McNamara was still there in third . Wood had th e holeshot and pulled out what looked like an unbeatable lead a t the beginning of the second moto. Schlag had to work slowly u p from a sixth-place start. At the m id way point, Wood fell and both McNamara and Schlag had closed up the distance a nd were right behind him when he got moving aga in . Schlag wicked by McNamara and pressed Wo od who crashe d again coming do wn off the big hill putting Schlag ou t front for good . Wood stopped a third time and d id no t get back aboard until he was in last place. McNamara salvaged second, Ron Combs was third and Mark H earn (Yam) was fourth . Mike Beier (Yam) had th e holeshot in th e 125s with Spoof Pen a (Suz) an d Dana W axham (Suz) next. Waxham was very qu ickly int o second a nd chasing Beier, but by the third lap Beier had a commanding lead. Waxham was still in second but rid ing with a fla t rear tir e. He managed to ho ld off those behind him for five full laps . Phil Crane (Yam) was the only rider to fina lIy get by. Pena fell ba ck to fifth pla ce and W a xham held off T om Leat (Yam) for th e remainder of th e moto to finish third in sp ite of his flat tire. The wheel was even in decent sha pe at the end of a very im p ressive ride . Beier again had th e holeshot in the second moto with Waxha m right behind. Waxham got b y Beier in the back sweeper on the second lap and slowly increased his lead bit by bit, lap by lap, to finish well in front. Mike Holmes (Suz) held down th ird for much of the moto and th en Pena took it for several laps. However, th e mo st remarkable rider was Pete Langley (Suz) who worked up from a ninth-place sta rt to pass Pena at th e white flag and come across a t the checke red a corn fortable thi rd . Du ring th e final laps of this ra ce Langley probably turned th e fastest lap times of any 125cc machine for the day. When the Open Experts left the sta rt ing gate for th eir first moto it was Da ve Wood (Yam) in front with Dean Wiggins (Mai), Randy Pockrandt (Mai) and Joey Schlag (KTM) next. During th e th ird lap, W iggins go t past Wood for th e lead . Half a lap later Wood pulled off and DNF. Schlag chased Wiggins for th e next three laps before pulling int o th e pits with part of his electrical system dangling. Pock randt inherited second place 15 seconds behind Wiggins but closed until he slid ou t in a turn and dropped back to fifth . J im Ingl ebright (Mai) was the next possible contender to Wiggins' first place but he couldn't get close enough. Schlag got back in to the race te- finish , but was a couple laps down and out of th e money. The second moto was a new story . . Inglebright led the first half followed first by George McNamara and la ter by Jerome Heiberger (C ·A) . Heiberger quietly (Can-Arns are quiet , but fast ) pa ssed into the lead for the second half of the race. Inglebright stayed in for second and Brad Emery (Yam) , a rider to watch, was into th ird. Schlag and Wiggins were back in about sixth and seventh and unable to improve their positions by more than a couple 'of spots. The Vets led off the program on Sunday morning. Bill Wellman (Yam) and John Linbarger (Hon) vied for the holeshot. Linbarger kep t the lead throughout with Wellman second most of the way. Ha rry Bellicitt i (Ya m) was pr ett y far back to start with b ut kep t moving up to finish a strong second, relegating W ellm a n to thi rd. For th e second moto Lloyd Thornburgh (Yam), W ellma n and Li nbarger were first out. Bellicit ti was next in line and by the middle of the race had cau gh t and passed Lin barger and began opening up his lead to win handsomely. . Scott Castaneda (Ya m) was on th e first bike out in th e 250cc Novice race with Kevin Bixb y (Ya m) close be hind . Castaneda and Bixby pulled out a little from t he others a nd it promised to be a good race between th em . Castaneda and Bixb y traded the lead on th e fourt h lap with Carl Bright (Hon) an eager third-place rid er. Bixby easily reta ined the first posi tion when a spill in a mudhole, combined with a cram p' ing back muscle, convince d Castaneda to pull off for good. Willi am Budd (Suz) and Mike Raque (Yam) wer e a ble to find thei r way around Bright to clai m seco nd and third a t the finish. Bixb y too k the holesho t a nd th e who le second moto to rack up a perfect 1-1-1 score. Chris Huff (Ho n) ma de no mistak es this time out an d cla imed second to Bright's th ird. Steve "Chet ' Panovich (Ya m) took the holesho t in front of W iley Craig (Suz) in the first mo to of the 125cc Juniors , bu t crashed before he had finished the lap and all rid ers went by. Cra ig remained in front for three laps and then he also crashed but onl y lost ground to Allen Silhanek (Yam) and Gary Hutto (Ka w). Berkel ey White (Suz) came up from a poor start to d ice with Cra ig for several laps . White was in front of Craig a t the checkered flag . Cory Cantaloupi (Yam), who had looped his bike at the start of moto one , kept it on the ground to take the holeshot in moto two . Silhanek was a close second for on ly the first turn . Thereafter, he was the leader and moved very far out ahead. Cantaloupi rode in second until Hutto got past him for th e fifth lap. White gave the spec ta tors on the hill a perfect view of his move past Cantaloupi. White sq tared off low in the dish tu m to put the two bik es side by side over th e ju mp and his on the inside for th e next turn. As White reeled in Hu tto , his second- place finish was assured when a thrown chain end ed Hutto's rid e. Craig had gotten a poor sta rt but th e long moto enabled him to move u p through th e pa ck to fin ish behind Canialoupi wh ich was good enough for th ird overall. • BRoe GLOVER WINS!
