The First Annual Over the
Hill Gang World Championship
turned out ' the largest number
of riders, aged 30-39 , ever in the
Northwest. Sixty-five riders , backed by
the Washington Old T imers and three
support classes, participated at the
new T hurston County ORV Sports
Park.
In - a weekend filled with great
racing, the fifth moto in the Expert
class provided some of the closest
competition . Canadian Chad Sinclair
took the lead followed by Everett
Waltrnire and Ken Shandrow, both
from Washington. Shandrow got by
Waltrnire on the third lap and then
took over first place on lap fou r. On
the sixth lap. three riders made a
charge a t Waltmire for third place.
Steve Hall and Steve Glenn, both from
Washington. and Doug Hauck from
Canada all hung together for three
more laps when Glenn got around
Hall. At the end of twelve laps ,
Waltrnire had held on to third and
Glenn had to settle for a close fourth,
The Amateur class was a tossup
between Duane Barnhart and Dayton
Hickson. both from Washington.
Going into the last moto , only two
points separated them for first and
second place. Twenty-six riders went
into the first turn and coming out on
top were Canadian Lyle Miller.
Richard Thomason and Barnhart, At
the end of nin e laps , these first th ree
places remained the same. giving
Barnhart the overall victory.
Racing in the Novice class was as
competitive as a ny. Greg Stowe led the
way around the 1.5·mile sand track in
five ou t of six motos. For some of the
riders, this was their first motocross
experience. Placing second was Ron
Hofer from Vancouver, WA, followed
by Rock yJohnson a nd Joel Hathaway.
