(Above) Pat Eagan and his Honda finally topped the two-strokes at AFM.
(Below) Jim Tarantino (233) bested Pete Snorteland in CRC's 250cc Pro class.
)
Throughout the first moto, Tarantino
and Sno rteland had the tra ck to th em selves. Andy Kirker, running th ird ,
had the pa ck br eathing down his jersey
but managed to ho ld everyone off to
the end.
When the engines came to life for
th e second time, Snorteland led the
charge up the hill . Kurt Sofka was
holdi ng second , and Kirk er was
fighti ng in third. Set bac k in the pack
was Tarantino , figh ting and inchi ng
his way up to the front . What came to
pass had to be seen to be believed .
Tarantino had worked his way into
second with Kirker still ' in thi rd .
Kirker crashed but remounted in time
to snare t he fourth place slot. Snorteland began to lap riders with Tarantino
close behind. Traffic in front held
Snorteland up and Tarantino was with in inches of the lead. They rode out
their white flag lap practically on top
of each other, then took on the checkered flag. side by side with Tarantino
edging out Snorteland in a classic
photo finish . Snorteland had to settle
for second place money with Steve
Banning taking down third overall
with a 4-3 rid e.

Eagan reaches
milestone at AFM/
ND Riverside RR
By Patrick Behar
RIVERSIDE, CA , MAY II
For the third consecutive year the
ND Spark Plug Company is sponsoring four American Federation
of Motorcyclists road races, at
Riverside, Sears Point (May 18 and
Craig Gormley (149) scored two Pro class wins at DeAnza,
July 6) and Ontario (july 20) . There is
a $2500 purse for th e 125, 250cc and
Open GP, 430cc Production and Open
Superstreet classes .
A milestone was rea ched in the
430cc Production ra ce when Honda mounted Pat Eagan end ed a six-year
reign of two-stroke domination of the
class , winning the race aboard a Cycle
World Magazine/ND/Moriwaki Hawk.
Eagan's bike was prepared by Kaz
Yoshima at Ontario Moto Tech and
will compete in 430cc Production and
Lightweight Superstreet, with Pat's eye
on both titles. He won the Lightweight
Box Stock Championship in '79 with
the Honda.
Aaron Post crashed hard in turn one
while leading the Open Box Stock
ra ce, bringing out the red flag. Post
was OK , but didn't restart. The Champion Kawasaki team of Whitney Blakeslee and Lee Fleming continued their
domination of the cla ss, while team mate Mike Spencer did the same in the
430 -600cc Box Stock class aboard a
KZ550. Spencer had two other wins 750cc Production and 750cc Superstreet - aboard a KZ750 /4 .
The most interesting ra ce of the day
was the 250cc GP event with 34 entries
- a good sign of th e sta te of racing in
California .
Glen Shopher (Fa rm House Restaurant-sponsored) showed everybody .
his intentions by leading Thad Wolff
(who had th e courage to race with a
broken wrist that he incu rr ed in a
motocross ride), Dave Busb y, Gill
Martin , John Williams and Fred
W inters . Wo lff attacked Shopher as
hard as he could and suc ceeded after .
the ha lfway point. Meanwhile, the
same scenario was taking place be tween Winters, Martin , Williams and
Busb y.
Wolff led the race going int o the
final lap , but Shopher used strategy to
pass Wolff for another victory in the
class . The ever -lasting battle for the
other places finally ended with Martin
third and W inters fourth.
