Due to.insurance and lease problems, the third race of the Coors
Midwest Motocross Ch ampionship was held at Jennings rather
40
than at Norton as originally scheduled.
A good turnout indicated that the
news ha d been received by the racers
and a long day of raci ng ensued .
First off the line were the l25cc
Juniors who were picked as the guinea
pigs to dry out the well-wa tered track.
Kun Ross was mid-pack going into the
first turn and took it wide to exit in
second ahead of nine others. However ,
on the next straight, which was particu la rly slick, he and another Suzuki
rider bumped an d went down hard.
The rest of the pack managed to miss
them and Ross rem ounted slowly to
begin a charge tha t eventually landed
him a seventh-place finish .
Taking adv antage of th e situation
was Kaw asa ki rider Russ Pickering
who gra bbed the lea d a nd held it to
the end. Jim Buch ner held second
after ' the first lap before steadily
dropping back to fifth after being
picked off by Russell Woodson, Brian
Lu ed ke and Clayton Ba ney. Luedke
managed a second-place finish despite
falling three times . Baney . claimed
third ahead of W oodson a nd Buchner.
Ross, still shaken after his first -more
crash, sat out the second moto .
Luedke got an early lead with
Pickering applying a great deal of pressure by th e second la p . Their dice
continued until Pickering tried to cut
underneath Luedke , got his fron t
wheel snagged and went over the high side. Luedke took the white flag and
then the checkered for the overall win .
Pickering remounted quickly to hold
onto second and second overall.
Woodson took third and th ird overall
ahead of Ban ey.
Bret Weaver led both motes of the
250cc Juniors fro m start to finish on
his
Uni -Trak.
Ro bert
Vogt
maintained a second-place position
throughout t he first moto with Cunis
Eveleigh taking third after moving up
fr om a poor stan.
The leaders freight-rrained their
way around the course the second
moto without changing positions.
Weaver won it over Eveleigh and
Vogt.
T he top three riders in the Open
Juniors were Mark Ba nt am , Jerry
Claso n a nd A.J. W arta , all on
Yamahas . T hey finished in the above
order in the first m oto and then
switc hed it around in the second so
that the overall was W a rt a , Clason
and Ba nt am .
,
There was very little passing going
on in the Open Senior class. In the first
rnot o, Jesse Wessels led the who le way
on his new 440cc Maico. Following
him was local favorite Dave Emerick
and Phillipsburg rider Dan Hoover.
Robl led the second moto all th e way
and won- it easily. In second was Tom
Hickey with Rora baugh moving up to
hound him . Rorabaugh was right
behind him trying in vain to get
around until the end of the fourth lap.
Then Hickey slip ped slightly wide on a
first -gear turn and Rorabaugh went
inside of him , pulled alongside and
wrestled past in the next left -bander.
Rora baugh went on to take second
place and second overall easily behind
Robl. Hickey held onto th ird over
Randy Bryant.
The 100s were won by Bert Weaver
with a last -lap pass in th e second moto
for the lead over first -mote winner
Russ Pickering. Pickering took second
overall with a 1-2 over Dwain Worley
with a 4·3 tally.
