Winner Tom Webb rides away from a Hi Mountain check. Webb wins as Hi Mountain Enduro endures By Mel Bandini POZO. CA . MAY II The sou. annual Hi Mountain Enduro was held as scheduled in the mountains just east of San Luis Obispo, CA. The event was 38 in doubt until late the preceding Friday afternoon when the Sierra Club dropped its threatened attempt 10 get a federal court injunction. Their reo quest to revoke the permit had been denied by the local, district and regional offices of the U .S. Forest Service. The weather cooperated beautifully. Two days of intermittent rain ended Saturday morning, effectively eliminating most of the dust and providing near-perfect traction. The riders from southern California were all grins, most notably Team Kolbe's Tom Webb who scored first overall by dropping only one second. Randy Liebig topped the 250 A class and the first 200 A rider was Fred Hayes. Winner in the Open B division was Steve Smitz; Doug Barth lost only two seconds as the first 250 B rider and 200 B honors went to John Speight. The Cal Poly Penguins of California Polytechnic State University bring years of experience to the organization of this enduro. They have established good working relations with the local. corn munity. the Forest Service and the police. Whether similar accord can be reached with the Sierra Club remains to be seen. But despite the experience, the weather and the cooperative authorities, two miscues combined to mar the ride for many entrants. One notorious section in the La Panza mountains is known as "The Steps," an uphill stretch of jagged rocks . To negotiate it quickly requires either considerable experi ence in observed trials or much luck . The problem this day was a bottleneck at the bottom of The Steps, the result of using a 24-mph average on the section leading to it. A lower rate would have spread the arrivals out and reduced the dogging. Some riders were forced to wa it for nearly an hour. The second problem was caused by a mistakenly dosed gate. The course was routed around the gate. but the markers were not apparent. Since the gate had been open during the first loop, many riders were confused and lost time searching other trails for the course. Therefore, the Penguins decided to eliminate the three final checkpoints and use the last check before the gate to score the results. Naturally there was much grumbling and speculation about Sierra Club sabotage, but the Penguins have taken full responsibility . for the glitches. The two errors notwithstanding, nearly every rider who finished was en thused about the run . Even some who had been lost were glad to get in some extra riding time. The difficulty factor was low and the weather superb; in effect. central California trail riding at its best. The politics surrounding this event may well have lasting significance in terms of the future for open trails in the national forest. The spotlight was on at Pozo . The Forest Service was taking before and after photos and conducting scientific studies on the soil. The Sierra Club also had photographers on hand . The data collection phase of the Forest . Serv ice management study is now underway and will be until 1982. The Forest Plan is scheduled for cornpletion in 1983. It will determine if and where trail riders may use the forest for many years hence. Riders concerned with this issue thus have roughly a year and a half to make their opinions known to the poli o ticians and administrators. That may seem like plenty of time. It is not. Lands, Hames, Urias take Porterville ST By Bob Hill PORTERVILLE, CA , MAY 2 A five-race series sponsored in pan by Bates Leathers kicked off tonight. It will run every Friday night through the month of May. Ryan Land (Pizza Hut-Yarn) started off the night by leading the 80cc Expert race wire to wire ahead of Blayne Hollenbeck (Fosters FreezeSumners-Suz) and Craig Howard (Birkle-Yam). Howard came back in the 100cc Expert go to take top honors ahead of Rickey Hollenbeck (Fosters and Scott Price Freeze-Suz) (Waterman Industries-Yam). Mike Price (Waterman IndustriesYam) took the 80cc Junior main for the second week in a row ahead of Rodney Fallert (Yam) . and Jackie Roberts (Yam). Robert Land (Billingsley FordYam) took his first win of the night by besting Ricky Hollenbeck and Tony Rodriques in the 125cc Expert class. Land ca me back in the 200cc Expert race to lead start to finish over Pepi Lopez (Ya m ) and Jim Taves (Yam) . Pete Hames (Bill's Pipes-Yam) found the fast way around as he took the Jack Dannenburg-tuned Yamaha to a convincing win. Mike Vital (Tulare Muffier-Yam) held off Mike Garrison (Garrison Roofing-Yam) all six laps to take a well -deserved second place. The 500cc Junior class had a different winner this week as Dennis Alworth (Yam) got to John Hill (Yam) on the third la p with Scott Crager (Keeners H.D .·Yam) knocking on Hill's back door the whole race. Hill held him off and finished second with Alworth taking the win . Cervantes, Wood and McKenna storm Sacto night MX opener By Mel White SACRAMENTO . CA , MAY 2 Sacramento Raceway opened the 1980 season of Friday night motocross with an enthusiastic crowd of over 300 riders and 800 spectators. It was the biggest Friday night race Sacramento Raceway has seen in recent years, and maybe the best as well. The program lasted until I a.m. but hardly anyone had complaints. The track was superb, being rated a perfect 10 by some riders. Odysseys were even included. Sacramento area people are extremely for tunate to have this excellent program again running every Friday night. The first moto of the Open Pros was a race between Dave Wood (Yam) and Eric McKenna (Mai) who were one and two off the start. Wood was hot, but McKenna was hotter and got in front by mid-race and took off for the win. Dean Schultz (Suz) was third at the start 'but Allen Berluti (Mai) was determined to get past and succeeded after several tri es and finished a solid third . The second moto was an entirely different story except for Wood being first down the starting chute. Wood overshot the first turn and Berluti crashed, which gave the holeshot to Randy Pockrandt (Mai). while Wood and Berlu ti had to move up from last place. Pockrandt stretched out his lead as McKenna worked to get by Tony Bouscal (Mai) and Jim Inglebright (Mai). McKenna. Wood and Berluti finally tangled for second. Wood took it, leaving third to McKenna as Berluti crashed again and dropped back 10 sixth. Rick Cervantes (Suz) holeshot the first moto of the 125cc Pros with Shawn Walkingstick (Yam) following . A crash and a huge traffic jam developed right behind them which took out literally every other rider, at least momentarily. which gave Cervantes and Walkingstick
