CMC Carlsbad MX: Rhyan'rips again By Patti Firth-Trotter CARLSBAD, CA , APR. 29 They showed up in droves, enough Continental Mote-sport Club riders to warm the cockles of any spectator's heart. The first riders on the track were the 500cc Pros and with 19 of them on the line it looked to be a pretty good contest. Midway down the line was the man to beat, Steve Rhyan, looking calm and cool. When the gate went down Steve poured the power to his mount and got the holeshot to lead Val Tamietti. Horsepower Factory rider, and winner of the four-stroke race at Hangtown, was David Gerig. Husky rider and current CMC numero uno Alan Smith had the fourth slot with Dale Lewis (Mai) , Mark Mohs (Yam) and Daniel Steele (Yam) filling the next slots : The first eight laps the riders stayed pretty much in this order, but on the ninth lap Gerig was forced out of the race with a blown gear box . Smith advanced to third and began his push on Tarnietti. Val was successful in holding Alan off until the 12th lap, then it was Rhyan , Smith, Tamietti, Marland Whaley, Randy Norman and Steele crossing under the checkers before the rest of the pack. The second ' moto was a replay of Rhyan getting the holeshot followed by Tamietti, Smith, Gerig (who was on a different mount), Mohs and Bill " Mr. Bill" Jewell. On the second sweep of the track the order of riders had changed with Gerig again out and Jewell moving up on Mohs . Lap four was when Steve Bartley (Hus) manuevered himself into fifth, and the same lap where Smith made his move on Tamietti. From laps five to 14 there were no changes in the forward position. Rhyan went home with the largest share of the money, Smith, Tamietti, Steel e and Dale Lewis shared the rest of the pot. The 250cc riders lined up a t th e gate to begin the "go for the gusto. " Scott Johnson (Hon) was first off the line and going for the "Holeshot Cash" put up by Joe Erler of Joe Erler's Race Team. Following were Scott Burnworth of Team Suzuki , Steve Rhyan, Val Tamietti, Fritz Schlegal (Suz) and Matt Devich (Kaw) . Johnson held the lead until the checkers came out. When Burnworth and Johnson finished the dice for second, Burnworth slid into second. Lap six had Val Tarnietti, Johnson, Pete Wanket (MX Fox) and Chris Chaffee involved in some pretty heavy pass and go , it took two more laps for the order to change. Now the three through seven positions were filled by Tamietti, Wanket , Chaffee, Johnson and Schlegal. Positions continued to change and on the last lap the top riders were Rhyan , Burnworth, Wanket Tamietti, Brian Maloney, Chaffee and Johnson . . As was the case in the first moto Johnson got off the line first to lay claim to the Erler cash. Burnworth . locked himself into second with Juan Benavidez (C-A) and Chaffee holding off Jim Hoover (Yam) , Rhyan and Tamietti. The track betters were giving Rhyan until the seventh lap to make his move. He did it in six, and line -up was Rhyan, Burnworth, Wanket, Johnson, Tamietti and Benavidez. The first four riders were so far in front of the rest of the pack the crowd was now focusing their attention in the dicing that was going on between the fifth through eighth places. Tamietti, Benavidez,David Hammond (Hon) and Hoover were scrambling to get and .hold a money placing slot. At the end of the race Tamietti had garnered enough points to finish in the money behind Rhyan, Burnworth and Wanket. Scott Joh~on got the fifth place payback. • Results 500 PRO: 1.
