Nelson seemed to h ave the race in hand with about a five-second lead when on lap 10, Gibson seemed to get a second wind. W ithin one lap, he had worked his wa y a ro u nd Nelson and be gan pulling away, ta ki ng home the first moto win . Nelso n and Olson followed with Larsson holding fourth after fading from the leaders near the end ofthe race. . In the second moto , it was Olson's tum to make his sm ooth ridi ng style work for him as he shot off the gate to a lead that would never be cha llenged . Meanwhile, Nelson was pulling away from Gibson who seemed to have lost some steam since his first -moto victory. Larsson , who made a seven -hour drive from San Diego for the race, had gone down in the first tum. He re o started well behind the pack but flew with the wind as he moved up to fourth by lap two and got around Gibson on lap six. Nelson went down on la p nin e , mov ing Larsson in to second with Gibson la ying back in third . W ith only five mo re laps to go , Gibson, knowing he ne ed ed a second place to clinch the overall and take home the big money, quickly moved up to challenge Larsson. From then on , the spectators were treated to wonderfully tense, exciting wheelto-wheel racing as Gibson determinedly tri ed to pass Larsson at every possible opportunit y. But Larsson maintained his concentra tion and speed , crossing th e finish line in sec ond with Olson ta king home th e overall win . Results 1. AI Olson (M.;) 3-1; 2. Ron G;bson (Suzl1-3; 3 . T he so-called winter track with twists, turns and jumps ga lor e was a joy to ride with sca rcely any m u d or dust. T he spectators didn't hav e to miss a thing because the entire track was easily visible from many places. The balmy summer weather was invitation en ough to be out riding or watching and fine racing was everyone's reward . The 125cc Experts had a full class , but there were only a few 250s , so they joined the 125s to compete with no consideration given for displacement differences, The 250s were definitely at an advantage pulling up the straights, while the I25s could outbrake them a little in the comers. It made for some pretty good racing. Mike Beier on a 125cc Yamaha had the holeshot in the first moto and led the first lap . Joey Schlag (250cc KTM) took over the lead during the second lap and kept it to the checkers. Will Akers, aboard another I25cc Yamaha , stayed in third the whole way. Neither he nor Beier seemed greatly concerned by the 250cc power of David Woodall (Mai) and Mitch Leuz (Hon) who remained behind them for fou rth and fifth . In fa ct , Beier mounted a serious challe nge to Schlag's front spot, pressing all the way to th e fin ish lin e. Sch lag was out in front the whole way in th e seco nd m oto, but Ak ers was right th ere behind him with only half the cc's, T im Lear (I 25cc Yam) was third for the first half of th e ra ce but then Beier took over and began moving up on Akers. All three of those I25cc Yamahas were soon trailing Schlag's rear fender. Beier traded with Akers for second as the moro was winding to a close and charged after Schlag toward the finish line, keeping the interest high. Schlag was across first, Beier second and Akers third. Berkeley White (Suz), Bob Leipelt (Suz) and Brian Magee (Suz) came off the line one, two and three in the first moto of the I25cc Juniors. Soon it was White, Leipelt and Mike Wilson (Suz) in close formation and holding, no one giving or taking much. Magee, a newlyturned Junior, was fourth in line, but by mid-race got in front of Wilson for third . On the last lap , Leipelt got past White for the lead . Magee seemed to be picking up his pace toward the end of the mo to but it was too little and too . late . White came across second to Leipelt's first and Magee's third. Wilson picked up fourth . The second moto saw Wilson grab the holeshot but Leipelt was soon into the lead for the duration . Wilson retained second and White third. .Magee, in an uncontrolled downhill charge in pursuit of White , crashed hard and left the race until his head cleared. By then the moto was finished . In the first moto of the 250cc Juniors, White flew off the line in the lead and didn't fold his wings until he was past the checkered flag. Lon Wardell (Suz) was second off the line but Norman Kramer (Hon) took over during the second lap on ly to crash on the third and not be seen again. Mark Bagger (Suz) ca me up from a poor start to take the checkered second. Jerry Brandt (Kaw) was third. In the second moto Wardell had the holeshot with Brandt and Bagger next. Brandt and Bagger soon moved out in front to battle all the way to the finish line for first. White came up from a poor start to claim third making it a three-way tie in points. The overalls went to Brandt, Bagger and White, in that order. When the Open Experts took the field, David Woodall (Mai) holeshot and led the first lap. Joey Schlag (KTM) was second off the line but passed Woodall coming back into the stadium for the second tim e a rou nd. Chuck Aksland (Ya m ) was third.
