Schlag was in front for the remainder
of the race but Woodall made him
work for it. Schlag put a few feet between them, but Woodall kept pretty
much in ra nge. Aksland did not let
himself be forgotten either, maintaining a strong third place only a few
yards back.
In the second moto it again was
Woodall who got off the line first and
headed up hill in the lead, bu t pulled
off the tra ck for good almost immediately with mechanical problems. Schlag
was into the lead but not without some
challenge. This time it was Robert
Congdon's Maico that dogged Schlag
for much of the way · before turning
second place over to Aksland .
Junior rider Tony Flores (Suz) took
the ho leshot in the first Mini moto
with Expert Eddie Gold (Kaw) only a
wheel behind and soon into the lead.
The Minis were having trouble over
one of the uphi ll jumps and they lost
their leader Gold there d uring the
third la p and then Junior Bob Sisco
(Suz) as well. Flores reclaimed the lead
with Novice Chris Plain (Yam) in sec ond. Plain put himself back to sixth by
wiping out in a sharp left -hand hairpin turn, but his total bad lu ck was
confirmed when his chain came off
just a few hundred yards from the
finish line and he DNF. Gold had re mounted in fifth place but rode well
and finished second behind Flores.
The second moto was holeshot by
Novice Michael Smith (Kaw) but again
the lead race was between Gold and
Flores. Gold came across the finish line
first this time. Novice Scott Schubert
(Suz) put in an excellent ride in both
mo tos , crossing the finish line in a
strong third position with an Expert
and a Junior rider ahead of him each
time. Schubert took home a well de served first overall trophy for the Novice
class win.
One of the few consistent details in
the 250cc Novice race was that Dennis
Tate (Suz) was second off the starting
line and firs t ac ross the finish line in
both motos for a perfect sco re . O ther wise there were changes galore. Jeff
Holder (Yam) had the holes hot in
moto on e but crashed a nd let ha lf the
field past him on the first la p . Kelly
Marchbank (Hon) had a good start
and seriously contended a top spot for
much of the race on ly to DNF. Jack
Jacob (C-M did a strong consistent job
in the first moto and finished second
for his efforts.
Ken Klein (Suz) was through the hole
ahead of Tate in the second moto but
soon was lost in the pack. Holder got a
good start also and soon was challenging Tate for the lead. The challenge
was successful for a couple of laps, but
Tate reasserted himself before the
checkers came out. Holder had to settle
for second and Bill Aguilar (Yam) was
across for third .
