Semis
Another start line ruckus left Brad
Hurst, Tom Berry, Wayne Ra iney,
Billy Labrie and Rick Hocking on the
penalty line - only Jackie Mitchell remained on the front row . The second
attempt was red-flagged but there
were no row three additions. Mit chell's
starting advantage was negated by
bike troubles , and as th ey completed
the first lap, Rick Hocking led on his
Ra y Beck XR ahead of David Jones .
Bubba Shobert and Wayne Rainey .
Shobert had the lead briefly in the
early going, but the two transfer positions soon settled into tbe grasp of
Hocking and Rainey, with the latter
dosing the gap right to the finish.
Hurst a nd Lab rie led the rest of the
pack.
The second semi waited on Steve
Eklund's crew.who were busy trying to
d iagnose an ailment in the bike's
electrics, Eklund made the start. but
the bike ran poorly an d he pa rked it
aft er a la p . Asked what went wrong.
he replied , " I do n't know yet. Some
sort of electrical problems. We just
didn't have enough time:'
Without Eklund to worry about,
Ricky Graham jetted into the lead, re portedly on Steve Morehead's spare bike
and went wire to wire for the win . Gra ham and Billy Sch aeffer moved out to a
huge early lead over Ga ry Scott - at
least 50 bikelengths. But Scott started
wearing dow n that lead until the final
lap , when he dived inside to take
second away from Schaeffer in tum
three and kept it by a half a bike length
at the line!
Trophy race
Brad Hurst and Billy Labrie battled
for control of the trophy race until
Labrie slipped off the groove in tum
four of the fifth lap . Ronnie Jones ran
third through mu ch of the ra ce , only
to be edged at the line by Bill Schaeffer.
Hurst was prepared for th e win and
had two curies of his own at th e trophy
presentation.
National
Frantic activity was the name of the
game in the Harley-Davidson pits as
tuner Bill Werner worked hard to re o
place a broken tappet that Springer
incurred - but didn't realiz e - in his
heat race. The bike 's heads were taken
off, new parts borrowed from Ron
Wood installed , and the bike put back
toge ther, but a gasket wouldn't seal
until Springsteen rode the bike and got
it hot en ough. The pair was not sure
everything would work as they went to
the line.
Both Springsteen and Parker got
outstanding starts from th e second
row, and along with Alex J orgensen .
were battling for the lead. Parker put
a turn th ree move on Springsteen to
take th e lead on the second lap as
Jorgensen and Randy Goss also went
by Springer.
Parker led past the finish line on the
next four laps, while Goss, Ricky Gra ham and Springsteen traded elbows ,
paint and placed immediately behind
him .
On lap seven , Goss took over the
lead and Hank Scott started to make
his presence known , moving int o sixth.
Two laps later, Scott was involved in a
three-way battle for the lead with Goss
and Springsteen. On the 10th circuit.
Scott had the lead.
At the halfway point Springsteen
roared past Scott in a slingshot go ing
into tum one, but Scott returned the
favor at th e end of the opposite
straight. Not to be lost in the battle,
Goss nailed both riders to collect the
lap money for the 15th and 16th laps.
A lap later. however, he was in third as
Scott and Springsteen crossed the line
side by side .
As this was going on. Jorgensen and
Graham were having a fine battle over
fourth with Gary Scott trailing them.
On la p 19 Graham left the battle for
fou rt h and moved up to second. trailing Springsteen with Goss and Hank
Scott thi rd and fou rt h .
Goss made his final move on laps 21 22, lead ing until Hank Scott "put the
hammer down" on the back straight
and roared from third to first.
In the last two miles ' blur, Sp ringsteen went from fourth to second and
Jorgensen from fifth to third . edging
Graham from that spo t by half a bikelength. Goss was fifth and followed by
Ga ry Scott, Parker. Terry Poovey. Ted
Boody and Rick Hocking. Steve Mo rehead , Corky Kee ner and Gene Romero
finished in the 11·15 slots , with Mike
Kidd motoring around on one cylinde r
to pick up one point. J oe Wilson and
Wayne Rainey DNF.
After the race. Scott said he was
"runnin' through the comers as hard
as I could without making the wheels
spin . I got just enough edge to make
the difference. What did I win by?
Ten yards? Plus. the Lord was riding
with me and I can't lose there."
