Graham fourth and Parker f ifth. The battle for the final transfer w as down to t he w ire between Gary Scott (5) and Billy Schaeffer. Scott made up over 30 bikelen gths to ta ke it. Act ion abounded in the third heat as Gary Scott headed the pack through the first two corners. onl y to see Terry Poovey go by down the back chute. ~G a rth Brow and Jay Springsteen were quickly involved in the fracas . It devel oped into a three-way battle for the lead between Brow , Poovey and Springer, as Scott dropped back and Randy Goss started to move up. The order of the top three depended on which inch of San Jose real estate was invol ved at the time, with Springer usually going by Brow and Poovey on the high line through turns three and four , and the pair repassing Spring. . steen past the finish line. Goss joined th e battle with just over a lap to go , and got by his teammate on the white flag lap. The final lap saw the order shuffled still further as Goss passed Poovey, and Brow was stricken with a flat tire on the last turn of the last lap. Goss won with the fast heat time of the day, Poovey was second and Springer third. Gary Scott and Bill Schaeffer finished 4 -5. The final heat was as frantic as any of the da y, with Alex Jorgensen, KlotzWiseco riders Ricky Graham and Scott Parker and Steve Eklund all making a bid for th e lead , usually at th e same time. Jorgy led the first two laps before a tu rn two bobble set him up for a Parker pass , then Parker and Eklund took stabs at th e lead before J orgensen got it back. Right behind the four -way dogfight , Norton Ra cing's Steve Morehead was making his way up. With two laps to .go, the first two spots had settled into the hands of Jor. gensen a nd Parker, with a three-way battle for the final direct transfer be tween Eklund , Graham and Morehead. Eklund had it on the white flag lap, but Morehead took it away with Graham _e~ging Eklund for fourth. J unior Invitational Steve Oort got the jump on the Juniors . but last year's top Novice, Jimbo Filice , riding an ND Spark Plugs/Grand Prix Plastics/Lawwill/ JB Racing Harley took the lead on the third lap. Rich Arnaiz (Arnaiz Consrruction/Ventura H·D) moved up to challenge Filice , but Filice held him off until he slowed and then dropped out, th e reported victim of a broken pinion gear. At the same time that Filice dropped out, Oo rt moved up and past Arnaiz. Oort led it right down to the white flag lap, but Arnaiz had one last ace up his 7
