A triple header of road racing, motocross and d rag racing was held in Fort Worth , TX , and Gary Bailey used a pair of Gr eeves and a Sachs to win all three classes of the motocross. Road race winners included Tommy Byan, Mike JUdd, Mike Cone, Steve Hunt and Bently Hardwick. Eddie Hill won two of the three eliminator tides in the drags ; the other went to Frank Russell, In Ascot motocross competition, Montesa-rnounred Tim Hart won every moto he rod e - six - to win the 250 and 500cc Expert classes. It was announced that a new motorcycle park. was being built by the Newhall Land and Farm Corp. near Castiac Junction. Walt James of the California Racing Association was retained to manage the 300-acre park, which was named (in memory of the Alliklik group of the Shoshonean tribe, who roamed the area) as Indian Dunes. The AMA Grand National Championship point standings were shuffled following a ru ling that the number of points awarded wer e to be based on the total pune for an event, ra the r than on j ust the amount of mo ney paid for the championship ra ce itself. After the shuffle, the top 10 wer e Dick Mann (165), Yvon DuHamel (117), Mert Lawwill (110), Jim Rice (106), Gene Romero (105), Dave Aldana (104) , Don Castro (96) , Russell Coppage (72), Geoff Perry (67) and Walt Fulton (62). Rick Woods' younger. brother Gene bested eigh t-year-old Jeff Ward in a special min ib ike race . In regular grown up ac tion, Gus Lauer won the Handicap Main Event as Rick Woods made history as th e first rider to sta rt from the 60-yard line. Woods came back to win the Scra tch po rtion of the program. A good four-hanger is ha rd to put down, as Rich Thorwaldson discovered when he won th e Red Dots 0 -37 ha re scrambles with a Rickman-Triumph.
