Newman and Anderson go for gold at Wolfcreek By Charlie Wiese • WOLFCREEK PARK, TX, MAR. 16 Nothing fancy for Kip Muirhead. but he sure went fast. Muirhead returns to MX at Jennings By Mitch Rorabaugh Photos by Shirley Muirhead and Kurt Ross JENNINGS, KS, MAR. 23 A former KMSA great, Kip Muirhead, returned to motocross after several years' absence and ran away with the win in the Open Junior class. .. 36 Muirhead showed up at jennings with younger brother Allen and borrowed his Suzuki to see if he still had it. A holeshot in the first moto and the subsequent win over Ed Heim, Tom Bahl and Mark SteveDll proved that he did. In the second mota it was Many Conroy that jumped into the lead and held it over Muirhead, Mark Bantam and Bohl for the first lap. Muirhead, suited up in jeans, plaid shirt and lace· up hunting boots, got past Conroy on the second lap and held it to the end for the overall. Bantam also got past Conroy, although it took him until the last lap. That gave Bantam second overall. Conroy claimed third for fifth overall and SteveDll took fourth for third overall. The Open Senior race was won handily by David Emerick of Hoxie. He grabbed the holeshot in each moto and extended his lead to the checkered flag. Allen Muirhead slipped into the second place position' early in both motos and looked good as he kept in front of Larry Blecha and Kevin Adams. Adams finished 5-3 for third overall ahead of Larry Chvatal's. 4-4 and Blecha's 3-5. Vitus Meier rocketed his Yamaha into the lead of both 250cc junior motos over Rod Steinmeu and Dean Howard. Although positioDll never. changed in either moto, Steinmeu kept himadf right on Meier's rear fender waiting for just one mistake. It never materialized. The most exciting racing on this cold, windy afternoon was in the 250cc Senior clash. Tom Kohl won the first moto on his Yamaha after taking the lead from Kevin Wagoner on the opening lap. jease Wessel moved up to hound Kuhl all the way to the finish line. but despite pulling alongside sev· eral times, was never able to take the lead away. Wagoner got the holeshot again in the second moto and styled out in front until the third lap. Kuhl and Wessel were fighting over second place and their battle carried ~ach past Wagoner in two consecutive turDS. Wessel challenged Kuhl for the lead constantly and by the fifth lap had managed to slip by him for the first time all day. Kuhl was all over Wessel for the last two laps and made his last bid for the win in the final uphill and turn. He pulled his Yamaha even with Wessel's Maico but Wessel had the best line for the final turn and held him off by a bike length at the flag. Randy johnson led 125cc juniors Don Bixenman, Mike Zimmerman and Kurt Ross through the first couple of turDS. Ross, on his Suzuki, then passed all of them in one swoop for the lead. He held it until just bdore the white flag when Brian Luedke passed after steadily moving up from a seventh place start. At the end of the first moto it was Luedke. Ross, johnson and Bart Weaver. However, Weaver was scored an eighth for cutting a corner short. In the second moto it was Luedke all the way to the win. johnson and Weaver held down second and third through.out the moto. Ross ran fourth and then fifth after suffering a bent rear brake pedal from clipping a tire. For the overalls it was Luedke, johnson and Ross. Only two 125cc Seniors were entered, Mitch Rorabaugh of Hayes and Dick DeWester of Benkelman, NB. In the first moto Rorabaugh led the whole way with DeWester pressuring early on, then dropped back to give Rorabaugh the easy win. In the second moto Rorabaugh again led through the first turn and the two Suzuki riders rode very closely for the first lap. Near the end of the second lap Rorabaugh pulled out a little more of a lead 'and then cut a little too tight on an uphill turn and nailed some tires with his rear brake pedal. DeWester moved up on Rorabaugh's rear fender as he adjusted to riding without a rear brake. DeWester kept the pressure on until the sixth lap when Rorabaugh opened up a bit of a lead to win the moto and the overall. In the 1005, David Green took the holeshot in both motos and walked away from second place Kevin Kriss. The second moto was even easier as Kriss experienced trou ble on the back part of the track early in the moto and lost nearly a lap's time. Jennings' next race is April 20 and will be the second race of the Coors Midwest Motocross Championship. Results MIM JR: 1. JonaIhan _ . (Vom); 2. Rod Dill (Yoml. MINI SR: 1. lion W _ (Yom). 100: 1. North Texas MXers came out in mass quantities on a pleasant day to support what is now the newest TMA-supporting track that presented the riders with all the necessary ingredients for some fine motocross action. The racing started early and ended late with the day's racing topped off by some exciting Pro action that was headed by Mel Newman (Suz) and Monte Anderson (Yam) in their respective classes. Keith "Tiger" Foytik (Suz) came back in round two of Mini junior action to take the overall honors as Brandlyn Ready (Yam) turned in a pair of consistent rides for second. Peter Thornfield (Suz) was third with 4-3 fmishes as first round winner "Racin'" jason Upshaw (Yam) faded to fourth with a Texas turf test in round two. Bryan "Boom Boom" Abernathy (Yam) dazzled the crowd once again with another pair of smooth rides. Abernathy was awesome as he led the yellow bird sweep with "Killer" Carroll Richardson (Yam) second in both rounds. Danny Storebeck (Yam), Randy Sloan (Yam) and Brent "Stud Duck" Carrizales (Yarn) followed in that order in both ex.citing rounds of raicng. Over 30 Intermediate action was dominated by jim "Mr. Cool" Calvert (Yam) as he put his yellow bird in front of the troops in consecutive matos. "Rarnblin'" Ray Neal (Yam) brought the "clean look" back as he came back in round two for second with Whitney "Wild Man" Fanning (Hon) in third after first rOlllld threat Alan Davis (Suz) dropped to founh with a second round soil sample. Elmer "Wrench" Morgan (Yam) added to his string of victories as he aced the competition in both rounds of Over 30 Pro action. Morgan was flawless as Gary "Lead Foot" Chandler (Mai) put his red bike in the second slot in both rounds as Tom Hollister (Yam) piloted his yellow bird to third behind the pair of speedsters. lOOcc Senior action had Rick Standifer (Yam) taking advantage of "Terrible" Tim Butler (So2) when Butler took a second round soil sample that enabled Standifer to take top honors after a heated battle with the hard charging Butler. Paul York (Yarn) was third behind the pair of young pilots with cODllistent 3-3 finishes as Ed Brake (Suz) rounded out the top four in the field of talented young riders. Danny Storebeck (Suz) came back from his third place finish in Mini Senior action to take top honors in lOOcc junior action. Storebeck was quick and consistent with a pair of sec· onds to his credit as Curtis Coker (Yam) held down second overall. First round winner Mike Cook (Suz) dropped to third after a seventh in round two of the action·packed event. Micro Mini competitors moved dirt next with Clay Branch (Suz) putting forth a fine dfort for the overall win. Branch's 2-1 finishes were enough for the win as first round winner Dale Storebeck (Yam) managed a second with a 1-2 tally. 125cc Novice action was split into two divisions due to the large number of riders. Mark Terry (Hon) took the overall honors in Division One when first round winner "Bad" Bubba Neal (Yam) took a soil sample that dropped him to sixth in round two for second overall. Paul York (Yam) was third with a 3·5 performance. Division Two had Mike Foytik (Suz) coming back from some hard luck in lOOcc action to win consecutive motos for the overall honors in 125cc Novice action. Mark Withrow (Yarn) came back for second after a first round founh as Danny Burnap (Yam) finished third in each action-filled round. Rick Standifer (Yam) dropped to fourth in the overall column with a fifth in round two. Chris "Rocket" Retra (Hon) put his "red rocket" at the head of the 250cc Novice class with a. 2·1 performance. Flynn Coon (Yam) was second after first round winner Stacey MacDonald (Yam) dropped to third with a fifth in round two due to a slow start. Intermediate and Pro practice brought forth some changes as a few new faces to the afternoon crowd showed up on the starting grid. 125cc Intermediate action was dominated by a few of the new faces as Donnie McMiI· Ian '.3UZ) put his name at the head of the class with a 1-2 tally. Newcomer to the class Robbie Wilson (Suz) was second with a 2-3 effort as second round winner Chuck Dawson (Suz) rounded out the top three after a crash in round one to make the sweep of newcomers complete. Mel Newman (Suz) devastated the 125cc Pros with a pair of flawless rides. Round one had Newman ahead as the gate hit the ground with Dennis "Max" Brand (Yam) holding down the second slot. Smooth, consistent rides by Brand weren't enough on this fine day as Newman left the field in similar fashion in both rounds. Brand took an ailing yellow bird to second with Ronald Dawson (Suz) and Rueben Alonzo (Suz) taking their bikes to third and fourth in the overall column. The Martin brothers, jimmy and jerry, were fifth and sixth on their "red rockets." "Tricky" Troy Rogers (Hon) led the "red rocket" dominated 250cc Intermediates to victory despite a close encounter with a lapped rider in round one. Rogers' 2-1 performance was enough for the nod as "Gassin'" Glen Goodier (Hon) was equally consistent in second with Nat Segovia (Hon) tak· ing third with a pair of fourths. 250cc Pro action looked to be an· other Newman (Yam) benefit. After round one, however, "Magic Monte" Anderson (Yam) carne back to take the overall win after a thrilling battle with Kirk "The Kid" Spencer (Yam). Round one ended with Newman holding down the number one slot after "The Kid" led briefly before detouring through a hole in the fence. "Magic Monte" moved through the pack for second behind Newman with Spencer ending up third. Round two had "Magic Monte" com· ing back for the win after Newman took an early soil sample only to DNF later. Spencer led at the drop of the gate in round two with Anderson slipping under "The Kid" by mid·moto to lead for the duration. At the end, Spencer was a close second as the red rocket ace Randy "Fluid Form" Sulli· van (Hon) rounded out the top three .
