TEN YEARS It ~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!~ II ~ E AGO Three thousand six hundred and fifty three days ago, the cover of Cycle News showed an on-the-gas-but-out· of-shape Al Baker leading John DeSoto and the rest of the 500cc Senior pack at the Viewfinders GP, which was held at the now defunct Baymare Raceway. DeSoto won that race, but Baker was triumphant in the 250cc event. The Open ~xpert race, better known at the time as the "Triumph" Expert race, went"to Rick Shirey, who came from behind to beat the pack on his big British boomer. BSA-mounted Dave Aldana LOok the Expert main event at the weekly Ascot TT, besting the Harley-Davidson of Mark Brelsford and the Triumph of Skip Van Leeuwen. Triumph rider John Hateley won the Amateur class, and for the second week in a row, Gary Scott won the Novice event on a Bultaco. A big headline on p. !l!l announced "Bruce Brown working on film about motorcycle competition." The accompanying story about the film then tentatively called "Any Sunday" - said that' a sizeable portion of the film would deal around California riding ace Malcolm Smith, and that Brown was considering shooting a segment of film devoted to a professional circuit racer. No mention was made of Steve McQueen. The final paragraph said Brown had turned down some other offers, "waiting. you'd like to think, to start production on "Any Sunday." Sylvain Gehoers' win in a Mar. 27 International race in England marked the first win for Suzuki's !l70 RN 70 in European competition. Suzuki was slated to begin competi~ion in both 250 and 500cc GPs, with a !lO-horsepower, I94-pound 250 and the !lShorsepower, 202-pound !l70. Speedway racing made its debut- at Lancaster's Antelope Valley Fairgrounds and in the Scratch Main Event, Rick Woods looked like a sure winner until a last lap crash put him out of contention and Steve Bast came up the winner. "Wild Bill" Cody was the vietor in the Handicap Main Event. The AMA Trustees held their annual meeting in Columbus, OH, and reelected William Bagnall of Sierra Madre, CA, as President. To serve with Bagnall on the eight-man Executive Committee were Michael F. Bondy, Russell March, Larry Wise, Rosy Rockwood, E.W. Coleman, John Harley and Jess Thomas. ...... .....
