There were three loops - the first was 20 miles, the second was 40 and then the 30 racen rode the fint loop again. 1m· perial Valley M.C. hosted the event held at Plaster City West. On the tint loop Dale Stevenson led the pack foUowed by Randy Hollen· beck, Craig Corda and Don Mathews. Mike Stearns, in fifth spot on the first loop, took the surprise water crossing with airborne surprise. Only one hapless rider took a complete bath: Roben Kuester was almost across when the bike bobbled putting them both in the drink. Irno the second loop HoUenbeck took the lead with Charlie WeIlr. on his fender. Then Stearns really began to go for it. He joined the dice game and maintained the lead to the finish. Second bike to finish was 69T but minus its registered rider. Mike McGowen was aboard instead of Charlie WeIlr.. Seems WeIlr. and McGowen are pannen for the Parker 400 and at the end of the second loop they took some parts from McGowen's bike and put them on WeIlr.'s machine and McGowen went on for the ride, There was no ill intent. Officiala had been notified but word had not gotten around before the finish. Don Mathews finished second overall and fint in class. It was Don's fint 250cc Expert ride. He had been the number one U5cc plater in '79. Allen Meincleriaee, in his fmt desen race, won the 12Sec Novice class. Bruce Cornell, wbo got this season's number one plate, kept it in the right direction as he 6DiIbed. tint in. the- • • Senion went after it on a short loop. Mike McGowen topped the Opens while Les Wolf, Sr. notched the Senior win. It took the hotshoes an average of 10 minutes per loop. Dale S _ n led the fmt lap but McGowen passed him in the second. SteveDIOII hung in there as did Ria Fmger tryiDg out his new Open Husky ride. Ria was dicing with the leaden through the rough stuff till a flat took him out in the third loop. It was not Husky's day as Chip Howell, another fast fella, lost his silencer and retired. In the 125/250cc race Charlie WeIlr. took fint 250cc Expert and Don Seay, Jr. made fint uSec, finishing seven of the eight loops. The pace was furious. Don Mathews led the first loop with Mike Stearns and Charlie WeIlr. on his baa. WeIlr. got past Stearns on the second loop, dicing it with Mathews who manaaed to keep the lead till the end of the lounh. They were smoking into home checlt when WeIlr. decided then was the time to pass. He did about 40 feet through the air, puling Mathews in the proces. Mathews caught him out on the fifth loop and they diced it for a quarter mile. Into the rough stuff, WeIlr. took off, putting four minutes between thetn at the finish. In the team race WeIlr. teamed with Randy Hollenbeck for another ~d scramble, takinlt the overall win but not without a wbaJe of a batde. Mike McGowen/Jim Nichola led the tint four loops. Dale Stevenson!Alan Klumph were second for two rounds with WeIIr./Hollenbeclt third. I~ four WeIIr.IHollenbeck were 50 off McGowen/Nichola. At the end of lap five WeIlr./HoUenbeclt were first home. On the sixth loop it went baa to McGowen/Nichola who kept it through the seventh, Far out on the course you cou1d see the dust and you knew it was more than one bike. As they thundered in it was WeIlr./HoUenbeck fmt for the finish.. As an added attraction for the younger set a mini coune was set up. Younpten 12 and under cruiIed it over the one course for me laps. Mark Kilgore, 10, took home the gold lapping ODe rider in the duel. Eightyear-old Pat Stidman took second. •
