You D D By lap five Roberts had 10 bike· lengths on Gennai as Goss continued to work his way into a challenging position dropping Rookie of the Year candidate Gene Church into fourth. In the final lap Goss closed on Gen· nai, but his charge halted as he slipped momentarily allowing Gennai' to follow Roberts to the National. Terry Poovey's ride was over before it began as mechanical problems side· lined the Texas charger before he got off the line. Lance Jones grabbed the initial lead, but it was Mickey Fay and Alex Jorgensen, aboard a Can·Am, crossing the line flrSt at the end of lap one. While the fight up front was going" on, Steve Morehead was putting his Doug Sehl built monoshock Harley· Davidson through its paces on his way to fourth. Jorgy challenged Fay while Morehead shadowed Jones, but the positions did not change. The battle of the rookies took place in heat three with American Honda's Jeff Haney and Freddie Spencer going for it. Haney anticipated the start, bringing out the red flag. On the restart it was Haney again with Scott Pearson taking over quickly. Spencer's ride quickly came to a halt with a ballty gear box. By lap three Haney had moved by Pearson in turn three for the lead and the front two were set. Billy Schaeffer hounded Pearson for the final half noting later that he felt he had waited too long to L can either send the original receipt or a photocopy. 4.
