250cc rider Paul Eddy wasn't so lucky
as he got off before check one pretty
- hard. He's now recovering from a

They called it an enduro without
a speed limit. There were three
loops - the first was 20 miles,
the second was 40 and then the
30
racen rode the fint loop again. 1m·
perial Valley M.C. hosted the event
held at Plaster City West.
On the tint loop Dale Stevenson led
the pack foUowed by Randy Hollen·
beck, Craig Corda and Don Mathews.
Mike Stearns, in fifth spot on the first
loop, took the surprise water crossing
with airborne surprise. Only one
hapless rider took a complete bath:
Roben Kuester was almost across
when the bike bobbled putting them
both in the drink.
Irno the second loop HoUenbeck took
the lead with Charlie WeIlr. on his
fender. Then Stearns really began to
go for it. He joined the dice game and
maintained the lead to the finish.
Second bike to finish was 69T but
minus its registered rider. Mike
McGowen was aboard instead of
Charlie WeIlr.. Seems WeIlr. and
McGowen are pannen for the Parker
400 and at the end of the second loop
they took some parts from McGowen's
bike and put them on WeIlr.'s machine
and McGowen went on for the ride,
There was no ill intent. Officiala had
been notified but word had not gotten
around before the finish.
Don Mathews finished second
overall and fint in class. It was Don's
fint 250cc Expert ride. He had been
the number one U5cc plater in '79.
Allen Meincleriaee, in his fmt desen
race, won the 12Sec Novice class.
Bruce Cornell, wbo got this season's
number one plate, kept it in the right
direction as he 6DiIbed. tint in. the- • •
Senion went after it on a short loop.
Mike McGowen topped the Opens
while Les Wolf, Sr. notched the Senior
win. It took the hotshoes an average of
10 minutes per loop. Dale S _ n
led the fmt lap but McGowen passed
him in the second. SteveDIOII hung in
there as did Ria Fmger tryiDg out his
new Open Husky ride. Ria was dicing
with the leaden through the rough
stuff till a flat took him out in the third
loop. It was not Husky's day as Chip
Howell, another fast fella, lost his
silencer and retired.
In the 125/250cc race Charlie WeIlr.
took fint 250cc Expert and Don Seay,
Jr. made fint uSec, finishing seven of
the eight loops. The pace was furious.
Don Mathews led the first loop with
Mike Stearns and Charlie WeIlr. on his
baa. WeIlr. got past Stearns on the
second loop, dicing it with Mathews
who manaaed to keep the lead till the
end of the lounh.
They were smoking into home checlt
when WeIlr. decided then was the time
to pass. He did about 40 feet through
the air, puling Mathews in the proces.
Mathews caught him out on the fifth
loop and they diced it for a quarter
mile. Into the rough stuff, WeIlr. took
off, putting four minutes between
thetn at the finish.
In the team race WeIlr. teamed with
Randy Hollenbeck for another ~d
scramble, takinlt the overall win but
not without a wbaJe of a batde. Mike
McGowen/Jim Nichola led the tint
four loops. Dale Stevenson!Alan
Klumph were second for two rounds
with WeIIr./Hollenbeclt third. I~
four WeIIr.IHollenbeck were 50
off McGowen/Nichola. At the end of
lap five WeIlr./HoUenbeclt were first
home. On the sixth loop it went baa
to McGowen/Nichola who kept it
through the seventh, Far out on the
course you cou1d see the dust and you
knew it was more than one bike. As
they thundered in it was WeIlr./HoUenbeck fmt for the finish..
As an added attraction for the
younger set a mini coune was set up.
Younpten 12 and under cruiIed it
over the one
course for me laps.
Mark Kilgore, 10, took home the gold
lapping ODe rider in the duel. Eightyear-old Pat Stidman took second. •
