While Pat Kennedy (Bul) and Lonny McCroskey (Bul) were battling it out for second position in the Open Trophy class, Gregg Harrison, on his Honda 500, held the lead. The finish brought the checkered flag out for Harrison while Kennedy overpowered McCroskey to take second. The Open Expen brought Gulledge to the winner's circle. Charlie Orr got off to a good start but trouble with his Honda caused him to lose position. Herndon (Bul) ably rode off with second place and Harrison (Hon), after a back row start, came in third. Douglass Photos by Camera Arts of Arlington FORT WORTH, TX, DEC. 22 Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. That's just what it was; a good night of racing for the Lone Star Track'n Series at 24 Will Rogers Memorial Center. As the series draws closer to anend, riders are really getting serious about racing. Some are using different types of tires . that hook up better and some are cutting the tread to get more traction. Promoter Royal Sherbet is really working to keep the track tight with a ~ inch cushion. In the 85cc Expert, Steve Gulledge held the lead the first six laps with Rusty Patillo and Kenney Tolbert exchanging second position. Before lap seven, Gulledge downed his bike. Never regaining the time lost, Gulledge dropped to third place with Patillo (Hon) coming in first at the checkered flag and Tolhen of Cowtown Yamaha second. The l25cc class caused a lot of cheering from the crowds for their outstanding perfonnances. Gregg Harrison, Bill Herndon and Keith McCullough were in a pack in the first turn. Harrison (Hon) held the lead by only inches from Herndon.(C-A). The last few laps. Herndon gunned his Can-Am and grabbed first with Harrison second and McCullough (Hon) third. The guys in the Over 50 class aren't anything to laugh about. they really look good. Eddie McCoy (Yam) was styling and holding the lead. Every lenge against top riders from the Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit (TSCEC). The fmt leg of the challenge was the Redneck National Enduro hosted last March by Shreve· pan. LA's Dusty Wheels M.C. SERA riders Bill Price. Manny Garza, Calvin Taylor and Alan McDuflIed the way for the SERA circuit's 123 to 87 victory over a strong Texas team headed by Perry Davis. Andrew Cooksey, Guy Burkhan and Roy Pool. The second half of the challenge was the recently held Caney Creek Enduro hosted by the Trail Riden of Houston near Huntsville. TX. With only 11 A riders in attendance, SERA Chainnan Chris Rodemann III of New Orleans was forced to fill his IS man team with four B riden, headed by Husky-mounted Larry Woods and Chris Rodemann IV. The Texas team was again headed by Davis; Cooksey and Pool. with Steve Whitwonh. Joe Dixon, and Greg Odorn also ranking as threats for top honors. SERA hopes were severely jeopardized at the stan of the run when 175cc A star Kevin Taylor of Wiggins, MS hit a hidden stump and endoed about !lO yards from the staning line, breaking his glastes and clutch lever. His SERA teammates duct taped his glasses together while he-cleared his head. and after lOme 10 minutes he was off and running. At The Turkey Race is one of those that makes you ask yourself half-way through the first l~p. "Why do I do this to myse1f?" But the next year on Turkey Race eve you fmd yourself gatherin~ up your snow-riding gear in anticipation of another day of good 01' basic masochism. This year the starting line greeted the riders with eight inches of fluffy stuff. Local rider Brian McKenna outslogged 7% other riden at the LeMaus style stan to pull the holeshot. He was pursued closely by "born again" rider Mark Hynes (Mark found the true religion this year when he switched from yellow plastic to Swedish steel). Those that were into sage and gullies masked by eight inches of powder enjoyed thole flnt miles of the course. Those witb any semblance of sanity found it a bit tedious. A few miles out. McKenna and Hynes were joined by Frosty Selmer who proceeded to the head of the line aDd attempted to set a bit more rapid pace. Mr. Selmer and his increased pace made an umcheduled layover a few miles later in a three foot deep gully brim-full of the white stuff. Hynes and McKenna bid their companion a fond adieu and beserked it on into tbe mountains. At a 'point about half.way through the first lap. the riders entered an area that they all considered panicularly scenic. The trail took them through a canyon. along side a series of picturesque beaver ponds. These ponds wereso picturesque that most of the riden slowed to a walk to better enjoy the view. In fact, a great number actually left that delightfully glazed off·camber trail for a very close look at the iced over ·ponds. There may ha~ even been some ice fishermen among the racers for the clean-up crew found ~a1 holes chopped in the ice.
