Sullivan and Hawthorne tops at Mosier Valley By Charlie Wiese ARLINGTON, TX, DEC. 16 Nonh Texas MXers were greeted by one of those famous "blue northers." HoweveT, the weatheT had little effect on the actionpacked racing because it was int~ all day long. The weather was no laughing mauer; however, when tbe fog cleared from the goggles. glasses and windshields, Randy Sullivan (Suz) and Dennis Hawthorne (G·A) bad the best reason to smile - a thicker wallet. Action began on the cold Texas morning with Rick Kirk (Yam) blasting tbe IOOcc Novices. Kirk led Dean Miller (Yam) in what proved to be a close race in both motos. Kirk was quickest with two stylish rides from starting gate to the checkered flag. Miller was second after the race·long battle with Kirk. David Douglas (Yam), who is a newcomer to IOOcc action, was third with an impressive come-from-behind ride in round two_ David Barnhill (Yam) led the charge in the Mini Junior action. Do-it-)UIUSeIf S Barnhill was challenged in round one by Shannon Burns who was aboard one of the new Hondas. In round two. Barnhill was once again on top; however. Jason Upshaw (Yam) flew his "yellow bird" past tbe "red rocket" of Bums. Upshaw and Barnhill diced while pulling away from Burns. At the flag it was Barnhill, Upshaw and Burns. Bryan "Boom Boom" Abernathy (Yam) was once again the dominant force in Senior Mini action. Abernathy was dialed in perfectly as "Killer" Carroll Richardson was plagued with a poor start in round one. In round two, Abernathy began early with a holeshot that enabled the talented youngster to continue his winning ways as Rich· ardson followed in second. ahead of Tim Long (Yam). who is improving with every race. Jerry Boren (Yam) brought back some fond memories of yesteryear as he put his TT500 in front of the Over 30 Intermediate class. In winning. Boren put an end to T.C. "Top Cat" Carter's win·streak. Carter (Yam) won round one. However. in round two with one lap remaining. Boren slipped by for the moto victory as well as the overall win. Dwight Leatherwood (Mai) made winning look easy as he guided his Maico Magnum to victory in the Over 30 Expens. L.D. Riddle (Kaw) managed a second after a first moto baule with Elmer Morgan (Yam). Morgan ended up tbird overall after a fifth in round two. Robby Wilson (Suz) devastated the 125cc Novices with a pair of brilliant rides. Craig Gullakscn (Hon) was second after two motos. with comefrom·behind rides in both of the five lap contests. Danny Burnap (Yam) was tbird after dumping it in round one and a consistent ride in round two. j.T. Crawford put his "trick lookin' .. TT500 in front of the Open Novices after two race-long battles with Greg Butler (Bul). Butler managed good starts with Crawford coming from behind to win both motos on the powerful thumper. Jacyce McMahon (KTM) smoked the 250cc Novices with a pair of victories. McMahon put bis European bike in front of the class with David Jones (C-A) following closely on his Canadian mount. The results sbow how competitive this class is becoming with five different brands of bikes in the top six places. The afternoon practice followed with mOSt of the riders coming prepared for the freezing temperatures that were accompanied by a 20 milean-hour north wind. The 125cc Intermediate riders. led by Terry Tinney (Hon). were first to pound the Texas turf in the afternoon program. Tinney. aboard a new "red rocket." left the competition in his roost. "Radical" Rodney Walker (Hon) finished second with a come· from· behind ride that left Delbert McDonald (Suz) in third a-nd Kevin Dozier (Suz) fourth after two rounds of tight racing. Randy Sullivan (Suz) was in his usual "fluid form" as he once again aced the competition in consecutive motos. In round one. David Walker (Hon) applied pressure before getting off at speed on the fourth lap. From that point on Sullivan began stretching his lead as Kirk Dillon (Yam) moved to second with Steve Pate (Hon) seizing while puuing the pressure on Dillon. Gavin Punch (Suz) and Paul Knox (Suz). third and fourtb, had a rac~ of their own, as Sullivan and Dillon raced ahead. By ____ ~ chewed through the ice with their • knobbys. clever fellows. At the end of the first lap. Hynes held a seven minute lead over second place McKenna. Their 45 minute Lap put tbem far abead of the main mass of riders wbo would be averaging 90 minutes for the first lap. The pair maintained their sizeable lead until they reacbed those beloved beaver ponds again. Alas and alak. t'was there that tragedy befell our leaders. Hyne's bike chose this spot to stick it's throule. He felt discretion to be tbe beuer part of valor and sent bis faithful steed on alone. After it spent a few minutes covorting about on the beaver pond at full tilt. he remounted and began the task of trying to regain the trail. In the meantime. McKenna lost a good deal of time while he succumbed to a fit of laughter. During this lapse. Freddy Donoho had moved into the lead. Not that Fred was having an easy time of it. At a previous check-point he bad noted that a quarter-sized hole in his Husky's gearbox had allowed its vital fluids to drain onto tbe ground. But, not being one to become unduly alarmed. be had proceeded on. McKenna and Donoho battled to the fmish witb Donobo taking the victory by a bike length. Mark Hynes was a distant tbird and Wayne Sturm flTSt 250cc and fourth overall. As tbe crew swept the course. riders filtered on over to the nearby cabin where tbe ladies had chili and beer waiting. Twenty-one riders of tbe 72 starters fmished the two lap race but all were able to make it to the beans and booze. One rider announced that he felt the course was too easy. but it was soon extracted that he failed to stop by any of the check points on his way to the chili and beer.
