i NDRnIERN DATEUNE ~ In the first Mini moto, 80cc Intermejiate Sven Stillmock rode like a half·size DeCoster, beating 80cc Expert Rod Reynolds and threatening the loocc leaders. In the second goround, Reynolds did the same when Stillmock slowed a bit. The final event of the Flying W's series, a semi-pro motocross with 150% payback, will be November 4 when a KX 250 will be given away in a drawing for riders only. E Results Ted Oevidson'. Gleze Elec:tric: Bulled the distance at Monterey. McElroy repeats at Winnemucca By Wretched Racer WINNEMUCCA, NV, OCT. 21 Maico mounted AI McElroy scored his second Open Expert win in a row at the second event of the Flying W's MX series. • .....;42.. McElroy led at the stan of the first moto but that first lap was red-flagged becauae some keyed·up Experts had jumped the gate. On the restan, Conrad Stitser (KTM) got the holeshot and led briefly but McElroy quickly reeled him in on the uphill of the first lap and kept it that way until the checkered. Stitser hung in there for second place. Darrol Brown (Hon) and Tony Berluti (Yam) swapped third place for a while until Brown's thumper prevailed over Berluti's 250. Second moto, Stitser grabbed the lead and this time' he didn't let go. On the third lap of the 30-minute moto, McElroy crashed heavily - tearing the cross bar clean off his handlebars and seriously detuning himself. He continued, very slowly, until just before the white flag when he stopped due to pain in his wrist. He finally pushed across the finish line for what seemed to be last place and out of the money. Brown and Berluti resumed their duel with the lauer taking over second when Brown broke the motor mounts out of his four· straker and DNF. Terry Hall (Hus) finished third. But, and a big "but" it is, a protest I was lodged that Stitser had changed bikes berween motos and had won on a Maico. Changing bikes is a common practice but, though it is often overlooked, there is a District 36 rule against it. So the Club had to uphold the protest. Stitser was relegated to last place and everyone else moved up one position. McElroy's 1·3 gave him the overall and the series point lead. All that excitement topped a program that warmed the chilly gray dawn that had greeted this event. Three days of light rain prior to raceday made for perfect traction and cool, cloudy weather made for perfect riding conditions. The usually tonurous track was smoothed, straightened and fast! (Too fast judging by the number of blowups, crashes, and injuries.)' , All the IntermediateS ran together in one moto and the different displace· ment sizes mixed it up pretty well. First moto Brian Butler (Yam) led the Opens and overall all the way with local Honda pilots Rodd Lighthouse and Leonard Hornba~r breathing down his neck on their 2505. First 125cc, Mark Levrett (Yam) made sixth overall. Second moto, "Bones" Lighthouse (his nickname comes from a legend that he has broken every bone in his body at one time or another) pulled a most beautiful holeshot and held the lead for five laps with a fme display of 'r..ths riding. Lighthosue has just been advanced to Intermedi· ate and looks ready for the Experts already. Butler's big 400 finally wore Lighthouse down and moved on for the Open and overall win. Chester Maninmaas had his Suzuki four-stroke working well enough for 2-2 and second overall Open Intermediate. Rod Maynick (Yam), Jim Willaman (Mai), and Russ Wyant (Mai) ran 1-2!l wire to wire in the first Open Novice moto. Then, in the second moto, from out of the huge field came Dave Mattas, making his Husky really look good in a steady drive t~ take the win. Maynick hung on to second spot so the overall came out: Maynick (1-2), Mauas (4-1), and Wyant (3-6). Eric Schacht (Hon) had a healthy lead in the first 250cc Novice moto until the second to last lap when he Tboned a lapped rider and put himself out. Mike Williams (Yam) moved in to ace both the 250cc Novice motos with come-from-behind drives each time. Jeff Alexander (Yam) likewise came from behind to take second and third for second overall. Steve Mason (Hus) lingered down in the pack first moto but nabbed the holeshot second moto and led for five laps until he fell victim to Williams' drive. So the overalls read Williams, Alexander, and Mason. Consistency is supposed to be of primary imponance in motocross but 125cc Novice Steve Harper (Hon) did not find that comfoning. Both motos he held the lead until near the end when he faded to let other folks into first and second. Harper was the only consistent repeater; the large entry was the typical bag of worms to score. Richard ?ifcCord (Yam), Harper, and Goober f\eICarlo (Yam) became the win, place, and.show flJlishers. OPEN EX: 1. A. Mc£lroy (Mei); 2. T. Berlui !Yom!; 3. C.Sm-lICTMl. OPEN INT: 1. B. Spencer MONTEREY, CA, OCT. 27 With only five races under his . belt as a Junior rated rider, Doug Chandler went past the halfway mark towards his Expert points in District 36 shoTt track competition as the Monterey County Fairgrounds circuit called it a year; and Ted David· son took horne a first and second to show that the former Rookie Pro is back to stay. This smallest of race tracks holds much in store for those that care to ride it and some of the best do just that. The littlest of kids get to start and supremo Pee Wee Pat Ballew did the trick on the RM50 out of Salinas. Troy Watts beat out Jason Murphy in the 80cc Novice bash which was not won by Bodie Shepard for the fiTSt time in many races. Eric Mayfield was the big time Junior class winner and the point battle for the top Mini kid still rages on with one more month of competition to go. Chris Carr and the Jorgy's RM is in control and for the first few laps of the 80cc Expen main, the little blond bomber had it all his way. But one little bobble cost him the race and Kurt Chandler was waiting for just such a miscue. Riding his brother's Salinas Kawasaki, Kun has been doing a masterful job of catching up in points and, although he won't likely get to the top spot, he could still catch second place Aaron Hill. Coming back for the loocc class. Carr rode his TV Service Center/ND sparked RM to a big win for a double header. The twice crowned Amateur Champion will wear the number one plate well. In the regular ranks of Sportsman, Mike Rose is still the big kid to beat in the 125cc Novice class. Having moved out of the Mini ranks ol).1y a month ago, Rose rode well on his Yamaha of Salinas special, with Ricky Roach taking second and Charles Vorse having t'he 125cc Juriior all to himself... Jim Roder turned the trick on the ultra shoTt cushion in the 250cc Novice by winning a smash and bash over Steve Jackson. Doug Chandler had only one guy to pass in the 250cc Junior and he ran off with the big win over Bob McDonnell on the H&S Bultaco. Roger Hasen was in for third on the Cal Cycle special. Two heavy hitters in the 250cc Expert made for quite a showdown as Ted Davidson and Rod Spencer squared off for a good 10 lapper, both Astro Bultaco mounted. Davidson's Glaze Electric led the distance while Spencer tried his best on the Bill Ripley/Hap Jones special. Nearly taking the lead after one slight collision in a comer, Rod berserlted the outside but fell about two comers shon o( making the pass stick. Joe Carrera was getting a lot of help from the infield and used it all up for the 500cc Novice win over Jeff Weimer. Doug Chandler claimed the only double win of the night, talcing his green and white TT 500 to tbe checkered overJohn Phillips. In the big 500cc Expert main Fred Bennett rode a superb race and collected the fruits of glory on his Yamaha Spon.s Center TT 500 over Ted Davidson on the KR framed Yamaha. Paul Iwanaga, back after a summer crash, is looking very strong. Bennett got a good stan and, along with Davidson and Iwanaga , rode for the last comer in a banzai show. He took the point and never looked back for a strong finish despite pressure from both Pros. Results PEE WEE: 1. Pot _lSuzl. 60 NOV: 1. _ Shopaod 1Suz). 115 NOV: 1. Spencer PLYMOUTH, CA, OCT. 13 & 14 As a prelude to the National Amateur Championships to be held at the famed Hangtown track, a special Saturday show was scheduled for all to try. An amaz· . ing turnout of both Pro and Spons· man riders used the track time to get ready for the big Sunday program. Michigan rider Scott Hinkle set the pace by winning both loocc Expert motos hands down. Only Regional Champion Karl Jordan was able to lead the younger brother of the current 500cc National Amateur Champion, Mark Hinkle. Riding on an RPM Suzuki RM, Illinois rider Kevin Rice was in for second over New York City rider Ralph Scannapieca. Ralph's brother AI made it a family affair by taking fourth. The 125cc Expert class had 45 riders going for the District 36 Semi·Pro cash. Dave Coupe put together a fine 2-1 effort for the win over Mike Proton and Danny Turner. Florida's Mark Murphy led out the first two laps over Preston's Jorgy's RM with lowa"s Mir'ch Moyer in third over
