horrendously up with its guard cover.
It took a couple of laps to struggle it
free and McKeever scored 23rd.
Berkeley White was clearly the moto
two winner, pulling steadily away from
the others throughout. Unfonunately,
he had to put it together with a 14th in
moto one that he had earned by crashing rwice. Perhaps crashing helped
a11ay any residual apprehension about
his recently mended collar bone - his
collar bone could take it, his "unbreakable" levers couldn't.
The 250cc Novices raced two exciting motos. In the first, Joe Augello
took the holeshot and led for most of
three laps until Dennis Ambrecht got
out in front to stay. Augello's next
worry was Nick Bishop, who hadn't
raced since August. He was eager
enough, but crashed trying to pass.
Bishop remounted in time to retain his
position.
In the second moto Dennis
Ambrecht clinched his first overall
and Augello managed to nail a third
which yielded him second overall.
Augello claimed that it wasn't a flashy
crossup that put him hard onto the
ground over the jump; he was realigning his bike in mid-air for a better
approach to the next comer. Usually it
worked, he said.
The Open Intermediates staged one
of those wonderful races in which most
of the riders are both fast and fairly
evenly matched. It really made them
boogiel Rumor had it that this was
Brian Manly's first race in three years,
yet he came from behind to seriously
challenge the leaders and collect the
second place trophy. After many
changes in moto one, Colin Mcdonald
finished third, the front wheel in a
practically unscorable group of four
that flashed past the checkered flag en
masse.
