Preston made his pass on the third lap stick for the duration with Coupe tagging along and Turner taking third in front ofJoe Cartier and Steve Pless. . Chalma Roberts led Charlie Halcomb out of the gate in round two but Coupe reeled in the front runners to win out over Turner and Preston. Running 55 riders in the 250cc Expert is not a record for District 36 but it's quite a sight to see them in a one row start. Husky mounted Billy Grossi said adieu at the start and was • never headed in the first moto. But Sugar Bear got a terrible start in the second moto; after getting hung up in the gate and starting last, he worked his way through the pack to a fine fifth place moto finish for a second overall behind Eric McKenna. McKenna had a great day of racing with a 2-1 overall win in this class on the Rancho Cordova Maico aptly tuned by Jan Houterman. While Grossi ran off in the first round, Eric had to work up from mid pack to take second position over Jeff Ellens from Michigan and Glen Wright from Virginia. In the second round Dave Wood on the Fairfield Yamaha took the holeshot, leading out Arizona's Rob Blase and McKenna. Eric bided his time and went fol' it just before halfway' to run off with the second motowin. Not quite so hectic in the overall counts, but real close in the upfrOnt action, were Alan King and McKenna (again) in the Open Expert where the &No traded the leading chores quite a bit. King was the overall winner when McKenna took a break a little early with Brian Jodry taking third overall over Wood's Yamaha. In Sportsman class racing the first of two 125cc Novice divisions went to Rob Paulson over Derek Wells_ The second division was a cake walk for Chris Lewis with a pair of aces. Lauren Godbee, a Junior ranked 100cc Mini, plliled off the ·overall honors in the First Mini moto and won his share of the class while Tim Aston won the second round of all Minis on a KX-80 and the 80cc Expert portion in doing so. Don Church split the rounds with Mark Lewis; Randy Jones won the 100cc Novice portion and Greg Michalec took the 80ccJunior portion. Bill Grigg won both ends of the combined OT/Vet race and was first Vet Expert while Steve Machado, defending number One Vet, took a pair of seconds. Jack Coulombe won the OT Expert portion over Jack Hartman and Jesse Dean in theJuniors and Steve Johnson had a 2-1 score for the Novice set. Howard Dunham aced the Vet Novices over Gary Nauman while Maury Deatrick deuced the Junior portion over Denny Hausmann and Earl Rempfer. The one 250cc Novice division was - easy pickins for Rod Williams who came in with a pair of wins. A pair of seconds was turned in by Rick Grossglauser while Chuck Beck took third overall with a 3-6 score over Frank Blake. Debi Bray won the Powder Puff rounds with ease while 100cc Sportsman honors went to Phil Rose over Bob Grijalva. Rose won both ends while Grijalva took second with a 3-2 count over Mike Wallace. In the Open Novice it was Dan McNally pulling off some consistent wins over Tom Bracamonte in for second at 2-3 over Dave Matson's 3-4 count. On Sunday, after the Nationals were run off, the Junior classes had their chance with one big moto goround and a separate payoff right around dark. Larry Coleman won both ends of the 125cc Junior for that trophy over· Rick Cervantes. Mark Palmer took both sides of the 250cc over Bob Vann with a 3-2 and Bob Davis won the Open portion with a 2-1 against Dan Steele's comparable but opposite 1-2 effort.
