Jeff Jennings (27) and Tony Wanket were long gone at CMC Carlsbad.
DeAnza's 250cc Pro winner Keith Williamson ahead of Mark Rhea.
at the end of the first lap. Tarvin was
right on his tail and remained in
second throughout the race. Reha
crashed in the early laps but was able
to nail a fourth behind Dysert.
In the Open Pro class it was again
Jim Lowe (Hon) who held the fourstroke banner high as he went to a
double win over Rich Bland (Mai) and
John Elledge. The 125cc Pros were
taken by Jeff "Goat" Hollie (Suz), as in
the other races with a double win. In
the first moto, however, it was Eric
Collins (Suz) who took the spotlight.
Collins went down on the fmt lap and
lost a lot of time, but soon he passed
Scott Baker (Kaw) for second and
closed dramatically on Hollie. In a last
ditch effort to take the lead, Collins
literally crashed across the finish line,
but had to settle for second. Collins led
much of the second moto, but he
dropped out and gave Hollie the win.
Baker was second.
The 250cc Intermediate class went
to Mark Branch (Suz), who has really
been coming on strong in recent
weeks. He holeshot both motos and,
while he led the first moto all the way,
the second moto wasn't that easy. Rob
Chapman (Yam) passed him on- the
second lap and went on to win. Eric
Beingesser (Suz) also managed to get
by Branch, but Chapman got a founh
in round one and Beingesser was third
and that made the overall standings
read Branch, Chapman, Beingesser,
Pat Taylor (Hon) and Rick Anderson
(Yam).

Rhyan, Jennings

CARLSBAD, CA, OCT. 28
The change
time caused
shortened for
Continental
back to standard
the motos to be
those attending the
Moto-sports Club
event here. It made things take on
more of a sprint aspect with more
urgency.
Steve Rhyan smoked the Open Pros
aboard his Mako. In fact, the only
time he was ever headed was at the
stan of the first moto when Bill Jewell
(Mai) got the jump on him. After that,
nobody got close.
Alan Smith (Hus) picked up second
while Jewell, whose bike contracted
ignition problems and ran only at low
revs while back-firing, clung tenaciously to third with Steve Walker (Yam)
closing on him late in the moto.
David Gerig (Esc), who had battled
for second with Smith, slipped and
went down in the mud at the end of
lap five, losing a couple places he
could not make up and finished fifth.
The second moto again proved to be
all Rhyan's as he won with incredible
ease.
Gerig started off about third from
last and made a forceful drive that
first lap that left only Rhyan and
Smith in front of him. The drive
seemed to end there, however.
Smith looked to be a shoe-in for the
runner-up until he started losing his
tranny a couple laps from the finish,
allowing Gerig to take his place.
Smith's better finish in the first moto
kept him in front of Gerig in the final
tally, though.
Steve Manin (Yam) and Scott
Slayton (Mai) picked up fourth and
fifth, respectively.
In the 250cc Pros, Jeff Jennings
picked up where he'd left off in the
past weeks; namely, winning. Aboard
Kelvin Franks' "Roo," he built his lead
immediately in the first moto.
Behind him, Tony Wanket (Yam)
led an early duel for second that had
five bikes swooping around each other
like fighter planes as they streaked
around the course.
Wanket broke away, though, and
doggedly kept pace in second. When
Jennings began making a few mistakes
late in the moto, including a bodyhanging -off-the-right-side-of-the-bike
number, Wanket quickly closed the
gap. At the flag, Jennings was only one
length in front of Wanket.
Mike Tripes (Esc), Mall Devich
(Kaw) and Chris Chaffee (Yam)
fmished up behind them.
Jennings got the holeshot in the
second moto and as he went through
the second comer, turned around and
waved. It was, indeed, goodbye from
that moment.
Wanket ran second the entire way
with Chaffee and Scott Johnson (Hon)
doing likewise in the 3-4 slots.
Don Fuller (Suz) proved to be the
quickest-starting 125cc Pro, leading
that class for a couple laps while Rick
Johnson (Yam) and Tripes made like
shadows behind him.
Johnson saw his chance on lap three
and slipped underneath Fuller on the
ledge while Tripes took his shot a little
later. Gerig came up after the halfway
point to put Fuller back one more
spot.
Johnson kept his same quick pace in
the second moto for a perfect I-I day.
Tripes came from a poor start and two
spills to snatch second, ahead of Andy
Northrup (SoP) and Eric Baker (Suz).
Fuller's fIfth place was good enough to
earn him third overall money.
