Zitterkopf was on top after lap two when he passed Broten and for the next six laps he had Burtt breathing down his neck. Burtt finally found a way around the Maico rider in a tight "S" turn section, but even after that, Zitterkopf didn't let go. It was in the final laps of the race that they finally began to separate and at the finish it was Burtt, Zitterkopf, Pettigrew and Broten. In the Open Pro class, Jim Lowe finally met his match. He and his big Honda four stroke have been on top of nearly every race in the last few months but this week Val Tamietti, riding out of TNT Maico, topped the class. Eddie Michetti (Mai) tool!. the first moto hoJeshot and led the first lap, but then Tamietti took control. Lowe also managed to pass Michetti two laps later, but that gave Tamietti valuable time to stretch his lead. Lowe managed to close somewhat in the next few laps but then he started to slack off with mechanical troubles. Tamietti won with a big lead while Lowe managed to hold on to second over Michetti and Mike Said (Mai). In the next moto Michetti again pullec;i a holeshot while Tamietti and Lowe filled out the second and third positions. They both got Michetti on the second lap and started to wage a private war in a classic two-stroke vs. four·stroke race. Tamietti held on to a narrow lead all the way through the race and the four-stroke fans had to go home tallr.ing about "next time." Michetti was again third. The 125cc Pro class went to Jeff "Goat" Hollie who put in a consistent 2·2 ride. The first molO went to Rick Jackson (Suz) who had to settle for third in the second round behind Randy Yetto (Suz) and Hollie. Results PEE WEE 1: 1. Kimberly Robenson ISuz); 2. Staten,lVorthrup .and lVorth at' Corona By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA, NOV. 2 In the High School MX at Corona Raceway, run with the program by virtue of numbers, having many more entries than the second largest school. Taking first for the North team were Marc Madore in the Mini ovice class, D.O. Ashley in the lOOcc Novice class, John Mazzacane in the 250cc Novice class and Randy Buckner in the 500cc Senior class. Rex Staten came out with a couple of production Yamahas which he used to take both the 250cc and Open Pro classes. In the 250cc class, he had some trouble with Redlands Suzuki's Marty Miller who grabbed the first moto holeshot. Staten held on to second for three laps before finding a line around MilJer while David Taylor (Yam) remained in third. Miller tried several times to retake the lead, but Staten s10wly managed to pull ahead. Taylor dropped back with trouble on the fifth lap and gave third spot to Ted Hoyt (Yam) and fourth to Dane Wigington (Yam). They still held that order when they crossed the line with Taylor rounding out the top five. In the next round, it was Staten all the way. The whole moto was a parade with Miller in second, Hoyt in third and Wigington fourth from start to finish. Staten finished with a small lead on Miller who was safely ahead of the others. Staten's ride in the Open class was flawless. He was on top at the start of the first moto and the end of the second molO as well as every lap between. Hoyt finished second ahead of David Gerig (Suz) and Rich Callahan (Yam). The 125cc Pro race was much closer with Andy Northrup coming out on top of a race that could have easily gone five different ways. Most of the first moto was led by RickJaclr.son, but by lap three the other four riders, David Gerig, Northrup, Andy Orescanin and Danny Burtt, were al1 close behind. Jackson was still safely ahead of the mob on the fifth lap when he fell, and then the scramble was on for the lead. Gerig was on top at first, but Northrup took over after one lap. Orescanin tried to pass both Gerig and Northrup in one swoop, but wound up on the ground instead of along with Gerig. Burtt took evasive action to move into second, but it cost him several valuable seconds and Northrup got away with the win. Gerig held on to third while Jeff Hollie was fourth. The next race saw Northrup get the holeshot while Burtt hung onto his coattails throughout the race. Gerig was again second ahead of Hollie and Orescanin. All the top runners were, incidentally, Suzuki mounted. Results MINI BEG: 1. Robbie _ IHCSI; 2. Robbie Smitl1lVaml; 3. Keith Chapman (Yaml. MINI NOV: 1. Steve Mor_ IKowI; 2. Jimmy _IYam).
