,---------------- -------------------------------------------------. , ~ Mike Tripes 1881 and Rick Johnson In close formation at CMC S8ddleback. won one class and placed second in the other two. . The 500cc Pro class was one of the classes where Turner had to settle for second.. In moto one, Pete Wimket (Yam) and Turner were the' front runners. Following the top two were MarK Brooks (Mai) and Suzuki's Bob Elliott. As the laps ran down, Turner edged into the lead but Wanket did not lose sight of Turner's rear tire. As Brooks was holding onto a solid third, seven other riders battled for fourth. With two laps remaining, the Moto-X Fox rider, Wanket, pulled within inches of Turner but it was not enough. Turner took theĀ· win, Wanket was second then Brooks, Elliott 'and David Gerig (Suz). Wanket pulled the "01 switcheroo" in moto two. He. led from the drop of the gate to the flag. Though Turner was hot on his heels, he could not keep up the hard charging pace necessary to overcome Wanket. Gerig was the third place runner with Randy Rodriquez (Mai) in fourth positil?n. Moving up from the middle of the pack was the Husqvarna>-mounted Alan Smith, the 1979 Open points leader. Coming up on lap 10, Wanket and Turner moved into slower traffic but Wanket held onto the lead. The moto ended with the overall going Wanket with a 2-1 talley. Second overall went to Turner (1-2) ahead of Gerig, Brooks and Smith. The largest 'class of the day, the 250cc Pros, had 54 entrantsĀ· with Turner again tackling another moto. Jeff Jennings (Fra), Tony Wanket (Yam) and Turner were first into turn one. Wanket took the lead after Jennings was forced into the rough and stalled his machine. Running in third position now was Robert Reisinger (Kaw) and fourth was Juan Benavidez (C-A). Wanket had a comfortable lead until his Yamaha came up with a flat tire. With this mishap, the lead went to Turner and Jennings was now second after dropping to seventh. Chris Chaffee (Yam) and Matt Devich (Kaw) were in a hard nosed battle for fourth with Chaffee finally getting the 'nod: At the flag, Turner gained a big win,. Jennings was second, then Reisinger: Chaffee and Devich. Moto two was virtually the same except Jenning and Turner swapped positions. Wanket again pulled the holeshot and fell lame with a broken crankshaft. Turner had the lead for a majority of the moto, but Jennings could smell the overall monies. Turner 'began ,to slow after riding his fifth moto of the day with another to follow. The overall went to Jennings (2-1), second to Turner (1-2), and then Reisinger (5-5):Devich and Mike Tripes (Suz). As the gate fell in the 125cc Pro class, Yamaha 'support rider Ric'k Johnson had a two bike length lead by the first tum. Following Johnson was Tripes (Suz), Rick Mak; (Yam) and Turner. Tripes momentarily shot into the lead but Johnson spoiled that and a very good two rider duel developed. At the checkered flag, Johnson won over Tripes and Turner outlasted E. Baker (Kaw). . In moto two, the spectators were looking for Johnson but a very bad start shot down all of his hopes for an overall. A race developed between Turner and Tripes and no one else could catch the front two. Maki battled from the middle of the pack to push Tripes and Turner. While Turner went for the win, Johnson had picked his way into third place. The overall went to Ron Turner after riding six greuling motos. Tripes, with a 2-2 score, placed second and Tahiti flash Johnson was third. Results . MINI JR: 1. R. _lVom); 2. R. Rundle CSuzl; 3. T. _lVomI. MINIINT: 1. T. ~ lSuzl; 2. R. Dic:kinoon lSuzl; 3. B. OCIR MX By Tom Corley IRVINE, CA, SEPT. 27 The local riders are now heading out to Orange County International Raceway to check out the R.A.C.E. motocross program. Every Thursday night different people have been showing up and many of them are racing on this .track for the very first time. There were a few new faces seen in the fourth race of the evening which was' the 250 and 500cc Novice class. Scott Lockhart (Kaw) led at first in the 250cc Novice class and silenced the rest with a win in the first moto. Tom Duddey (Yam) and followed the new green bike around and settled into the second place spot ahead of Joel Se.al (Suz). Mark Stroup (Suz) was out of it in the frrst moto but made a remarkable comeback in the second moto. At first Tom Duddey was in the lead and strutted about as if there was. no possiblity of ever being passed. 'Stroup kept getting closer each lap and every tiine that they soared over the bu'ge jump it looked like Stroup was gaining a bike length or so. Eventually Stroup made the daring pass and gained the lead over Duddey'while two Kawasaki aces, Scott Lockhart and Russ Sweeney, .trailed in third and fourth. Duddey ended up walking away with the first place trophy when the night's action was over and he netted '. the win because of his consistent 2-2 scores. Lockhart went all out in the first moto but lost a couple of places in the final moto so he captured second place overall. Sweeney placed third ahead of Stroup. Results MINI BEG: 1.
