Homey Toad family Mike Hllir 1871) topped the Open Intermediates at Corone Rec:ewey. Dale and Husky team up at Corona By Ron Law80n CORONA, CA, OCT. 12 Once again Craig Dale and his Anaheim Husky did their winning number to the Corona Raceway 125cc Pros, this time 22 winning in spite of a second moto crash. Joining Dale in the winner's circle at the end of the night was Can· .Am·mounted Juan Benavidez of Suzuki of Pomona who took the 250cc Pro class at last after coming very close in past weeks. At the stan of 250cc Pro moto one, Benavidez shot into the .lead side by side with Marty Miller (Suz) and John Gre~nway. Miller and Greenway col1ided with each other in the first turn and got out of shape but they both managed to save it with Miller going off the track for a few seconds. When Miller came back on the course he hadn't lost any time and he even managed to pass Benavidez in the next turn. But that arrangement didn't last long and Benavidez retook the lead on the next lap. Greenway was in third while those two were going for the lead, but he began to lose time on the second lap when his seat came off. He tried to maintain his pace but it was just too hard on the legs and soon Greg Zitterkopf (Mai) came up from the rear to pass him. In the meantime up front, Benavidez and Miller were going for broke. never more than a few feet from each other. Finally on the second to last lap Miller managed to pass Benavidez for a second time. At the finish they were still wheel to wheel but Miller had the edge. In the second round Benavidez and Zitterkopf jumped out front while Miller got himself stuck in the reverse fal1ing stan gate. When they came around for the second lap. Benavidez held a narrow lead over Zitterkopf and Miller was way behind in seventh place. Two laps later Benavidez and Zitterkopf were closer than ever and Miller was in third. 10 seconds behind. In the remaining laps the positions did DOt change but Miller did make a charge in the last pan of the race to finish within three seconds of Zitterkopf. Dale's win in the 125cc class was no new story. It was much the same thing he has been doing for months now, the only difference was Dale's crash in the second moto. After winning the first round with a stnaller than usual, but still substantial lead over Andy Orescanin (Suz) and Troy Lee (Suz), he got the holeshot in the second round. Jeff Hol1ie remained very close, just as he had in the fint round before a crash dropped him back to eighth, and on the founh lap he cruised past the downed Dale and took the lead. Dale, however, was quick to remount and get back into the race. It was on the very last lap that Dale retook the lead for the overall win. Second overall went to Orescanin who took a fifth in the last moto in spite of having gone down in the first turn. Andy Northrup (Suz) rounded out the top five with a 5-!. On the same night, R.A.C.E. moto· cross held the season's first high school MX event. Taking top honors was Redlands High in spite of the fact that this was the fint year that they had ever fielded a team. The Redlands team, which was the biggest of the six teams invited took three wins, with Richard Hoffman (Suz) taking the 125cc Senior class, Tom Hodgin (Suz) taking the 250cc Intermediate class and Ernest Lums (Yam) winning the Mini Novice class. Second place Poly High had Charles Giurding (Yam) win the 175cc Senior class and Kevin Riley (Suz) top the 175cc Novices. In third was Hemet with a win in the l00cc Novice class courtesy of Aaron Miller (Suz). Results MINI BEG: 1. Herold Grigoby ISuzl; 2. Dan Hovis lVoml; 3. Robbie _ (HCSI. MINI EX: 1. Trocy _ ISuzl; 2.
