Rid, winning every week except for two Fridays when he was in nonhern California and one race when his bike blew up. But Friday night it was Denton getting the jump out of the hole while Dale came off in second. The two of them quickly separated themselves from the rest of the pack with Denton holding about a four second lead on Dale. Throughout the race that lead stretched and shrunk but Dale never actually got close enough to make a serious attempt at taking over the top spot. Third place was in the hands of Andy Orescanin (Suz) throughout the race while Jeff Hollie (Suz) had to move up from a poor start to finish founh. . In the next race it was almost the same story, with Denton getting the holeshot and leading all the way. Dale came off the line in the middle of the pack but a good line through the first turn put him right behind Denton. The two of them were clOler than in . the first round but the dice mded on lap two when Dale crashed. Denton went on to build a big le,d, but at the halfway point his trallSl1lission staned to go out, with low gear totally useless. Orescanin, who paned Hollie for second on lap six quickly reeled in the LOP rider, but the checkered flag came out before he got clOle enough to be a threat. Dale finished in founh behind Hollie but still got third overall. Juan Benavidez and his Can-Am split wins with Greg Zitterkopf (Mai) in the 250cc Pro class and took home first place. In round one, Benavidez grabbed the holeshot while Zitterkopf crashed in the second tum. It was Rick Stout (Suz), however, who was on top whm they came around for lap one, with Benavidez and Ted Hoyt (Yam) following. It remained like that for five lar' then Stout, in the latest of severa creative DNFs, lost his brakes ... literally .lost his brakes. Benavidez was hit in the chest by a flying brake shoe and little pieces of shattered aluminum and magnesium covered half the track. He stood there looking at what used to be his rear wheel while Benavidez went on to the checkers. In the next race it was a close one between Zitterkopf and Benavidez. Zitterkopf led just about all the way, though, and Benavidez was satisfied with second, knowing that he still had top cash. Hoyt was third while founh overall went to Bill Chapin (Yam) over Dave Fernandez (Yam). Results MINI BEG: 1. .Iorfy Reyes lKawl; 2. Dow Hovis IV....; 3. S_1)o;e lHonl. The 98 0 heat didn't seem to bother Kawasaki-mounted Chappy BlOle as he pulled an early lead in the I2!'>cc class, with Mike Brown and Willy Simons close behind. On lap five, Brown got out of shape and that made room for Simons, Gary Ogdm (FMF) and Gary Denton (LOP). With Blose and Simons running away from the pack, a good dice for third staned to develop betwem Ogden and Denton, but Ogden soon was forced to pull off with bike trouble. On the ninth lap, Simons pulled to within one second of Blose, and Denton was starting to close in on the leaders. But two laps later Blose turned up the wick on his Uni·Trak and put some daylight on Simons. A new battle was emerging for third between Denton, Paul Emerson (Hon) and Rick Maki (Yam). Maki made a swooping move around Emerson and set his sights on Omton, going by one lap later. Emerson also tried to pass Omton, but crashed on the white flag
