I NORTHERN DATELINE ~ t 0') I:' 0') .-4 Mark Key C28El fi'esh off en Amateur NetionaI win. sets up for victory at SlIIl..... tonight over a slightly older Tom Knight. Sr. Johnny Pittman seems to know the right moves and came in for a good show over Denny Huff and Pat Seigle in the ,360cc Expert. San Francisco's Joe Mitchell likes to get good starts and rode the TT500 to the Junior win over Dave Houser and big Bill Evans. Former rookie Pro challenger Ted Davidson made the 500cc Expert look easy, passing Dale Mathers down the back straight, while Mathers kept the troops at bay. Bobby' Cunnington rode the RC Cycle TT500 to third in front of Steve Ferroni, who must have missed a turn at one of the many marathons he rides and wins. Spice of the night came after the races when Mt. View Dist. Co. put an extra $100 into the 250cc Expert purse for the first three places. This may well set up a series of Pro shows for 1980 with backing from Arnaiz Construction and Mt. View Dist. Co. Results 34 100 EX: 1. Doug Chandler (Yaml; 2. Kurt Chandl.. (Yam); 3. Davidson and Scroggins share Hills Ferry fame By W. H. Spencer NEWMAN, CA, SEPT. 2 Race four in the Labor Day Weekend Valley Series proved to be the big one with over 200 entries including some D-36 riders coming up from Tulare. Ted Davidson bested the 250cc Experts on the Glaze Electric/Zakarian Bultaco while Craig Scroggins took the other Glaze scoot to the 500cc Expert win over Danny Moore and Davidson. In the minibike crusades the split returned for the Chandler brothers with Doug doing away with Kurt in the lOOcc Expert and Chris Carr taking third on his reworked, but tired, RM 100. Carr came back for the killer win in the 80cc Expert class, which should really shake up the Black Plate point count, with Dyno Doug in for sec.ond over Aaron Hill. Bodie Shepard kept up his winning ways in the 60cc Novice show over Frankie Morris while Benny Scardina did likewise in the 80cc Novice over Bobby Black. Blane Mapp changed things around in 80cc Junior, winning over Jason Paoli, while Bobby Davis won the lOOcc combined Novice/Junior over Phil Barnes. A good class of 125cc Novices saw Steve Fischer take the win over Dave Cabballeo and Kelly Vorse, while not SO Tiny Pettit won the Junior portion over -long·standing buddy Jerry Lanning. Steve Hammerich brought out a new Can·Am for the 250cc Novice win over Rick Garcia and Mike Swartz and Billy Arbogast kept up a good lead to win his third trophy of the weekend over Bobby Nelson and Mike Richardson in the 250cc Junior. While Jeff "the Jet" Haney couldn't get his CR250R Honda to work well on the slick surface, Richard Arnaiz got his hooked up very well and nearly got around Ted Davidson for the Expert win. Qavidson got a very good start and rode off in the early laps while Amaiz passed through the likes of Mark Key, Billy Scott, Bob Cunnington and Danny Moore to take second at the checkered. Former Santa Clara Sheriff Jim Munjarez won the 360cc Novice main over Tim West on the ACK Products special while Mike Bird continued to do stand in duties for Dave Bird on the family's shop bikes by winning again over Tom Knight and Ray Fabbri. Dwayne McCaslin put the whammy on John Pittman for tonight's 360cc Expert main as the two Zakarian Bultaco riders dazzled the troops with their skills. Chuck Gondala rode the Tsubaki chained 360cc Yamaha to third. Joe Flowers got the best part of the 500cc Novice, winning over Gerald Spencer on the Valley Cycle TT500, while Hector Alcala made all the right moves in winning the 500cc Junior on the A&D Yamaha. Mike Inderbitzen and Craig Scroggins were having a real fine battle for the 500cc Expert purse until IndeTbitzen pulled out and gave Craig the win. Craig was doing a fine job of it but wasn't going to argue about winning by a straight over Danny Moore on the Cal Cycle Champion Honda and Ted Davidson, holding off Dale Mathers and Billy Scott. I The best part of this "Best in the West" show was the all nighter after the race that lasted well past sun up; but somebody else will have to report on that story. Results 100 EX: 1.
