coming into dreaded turn two. Paul
Peiroli zipped past as Gordie picked
up his Honda to chase him. Gordie
crashed again in the esses, leaving the
win to Peiroli, and second to Jerry
Whitlow.
Ralph Javins may be headed for the
season crown in 125cc GP Sportsman.
He took his MEl Service Yamaha to a
close second behind Tod Dressel.
Can-Ams certainly seem tp function
well in the rain: Steve Wyatt happily
ran his one-time dirt bike to a victory
ahead of John Moffett's fulIy-faired
Kawasaki, in 250cc GP single.
Paul Peiroli again looked fine and
took the money in 250cc GP. His
Renton Yamaha found an early lead.
then Gene Brown's TZ led for three
laps. Peiroli ignored the rain, making
his way around Brown. and had a
clear lead by the sixth lap. Meanwhile.
Sid Gollier was making up a lot of
ground on Gene Brown. Soon he was
within striking distance and passed
him on the ninth lap. Peiroli kept
right on gassing it and led Col1ier by
half a mile at the chedtered flag.
Brian Sutton apparently doesn't
fear the rain either. Although' he's
from sunny Yakima, ~utton took his
Yamahas to impressive wins in 410 and
750cc Production. It seems he
perfectly understands the subtlety of
front braking in the wet; he dove into
corners far deeper than hiscompetition, leaving even Rocky
Phoenix behind in the 750cc race.
In 550cc Cafe. Dave Zenger won.
Behind him. Jerry Whitlow demonstarted the benefits of moderation in
certain (wet) circumstances. Instead of
his TD-3-RD-400 monster, he chose
his nearly stock spare RD for this race
and easily beat Garry Gallagher's
peaky Kawasaki for second place.
Open GP was a literal washout.
Before the deluge, Jerry Whitlow
gridded his fast Yamaha next to W.A.
de Garis' TZ 350 and Chris Michak's
XT 500 Honda. As the rain began
pouring down in thick sheets. Michak
got the expected holeshot and led at
the end of the lap. Unfortunately,
Whitlow's slicks let go in the downhill.
As water completely covered the front
straight. the ambulance retrieved him
and the three bike race was redflagged, ending the day's event.
