Kim Jorgensen on a night of great scrambles racing at the Ladi Cycle Bowl. What with .the National Amateur Scrambles Championships to be held at Ascot Park in August, and with one of the qualifiers scheduled to be run here at the end of July, action in the Central Valley of California is heating up. A lot of fonner big time stars in the Pro ranks are getting back to the Amateur specter of racing. One new kid on the block is Bryan Knight, the youngest to come along, and a winner in the 60cc Novice. Jason Paoli continues to gain experience and trophies, winning the 80cc Novice over newcomer John West. The 80cc Expert battle remains the only other real class of hot and heavy, git·down and grovel racing, with the top three Black Plate point leaders still the ones to watch. Chris Carr on the Jorgy's Suzuki had the upper hand tonight with 12-year·old Chris doing everything just right for the win over Doug Chandler and Aaron Hill. Kurt Chandler is showing deftnite signs of heroism, putting a fine pass on Vance Sherfield for the l00cc Expert win. "Tooter" has put toper some fine moves with this year's growth (he must be near four and one half feet) and looks Iilte a Pro coming off the comers with both wheels sliding,· feet up on the pegs. Steve Fischer got the best of the 125cc Novice class over Ray Grijalva. Shawn Black J?rought out a new Can· Am with some brake problems but that didn't bother him; he led the 2SOee Novice heat and main, winning over Chuck Kole, who is back in the racing business after a five year lay· off, Billy Arbogast continues his winning ways in the 2SOcc Junior on the Jorgy Can-Am. Despite one rider trying to distract him by falling off in front, Billy had a good win over Denny Houser and Hal Hook. • . The 2S0cc Expert class is the ideal set up for racers with unlimited competition and a chance to ride with the stars. Mark Key has led and even won some races before but with his new Champion McGill Yamaha, he appears to be even a tougher competitor. Despite having Rick Arnaiz and Kim Jorgensen do everything but run over him, he held them at bay to win a great race. Arnaiz tried many different lines of attack while trying to catch Key off guard, but to no avail. With Kim Jorgensen tappin~on his rear wheel at every chance, Amaiz did a great job of holding down second. Dan Malfatti on ,the Cycle Works Honda took the 360cc Junior main over Jerry Lanning while Joe Mitchell took 500cc Novice honors without his partner, Silio Fabbri, who slid out in the sweeper' giving Walt Couch the second. Ken Bunol) won the 500cc Junior over Joey Brazil while Mark Key doubled up for the night beating out Dennis Kritzer and Dave Boyles. Big bike action saw Russ Sosa beat out the Junior/Novice combined show and John Tavis is still the 40 inch Expert to_ beat on the John and Louis Midnight Service Triumph. Old man Bud Riddle was all smiles in the pay off line where he asked for a trophy rather than the semi-Pro money, "It looks better on the mantle." Brian O'Hagan watched the proceedings after trying to put a pass on Tavis and wound up high siding over the jump with his Buffalo Number Plates Triumph landing, luckily, about a foot away. Orlandi tops U.S. Speedway Champ at Aubum By Cynthia Miler AUBURN, CA,JUNE 14 This weeks Auburn Speedway show packed the stands with' fans who turned out to see SoCal's United States Speedway Champion Mike Bast go against the best from NorCal. Mike expected a night of hard, fast racing and he got it! The northern California riders proved to be just too much for him as the evenings results showed. Possibly due to poor track conditions, Mike managed only one big win, that coming in the Scratch Consolation when he and Dennis "Choo Choo" Robinson, one of the north's best riders, locked into a wheel·to-wheel duel in what seemed a matched race. On the final tum Dennis tried to put his wheel under Mike, but got the door slammed on him as Mike rode on to the win. Racing was delayed for about 15 minutes early' in the program when Mike Ballinger, from southern California, crashed through the retaining wall. A shaken Ballinger waved off the ambulance, but was unable to race for the-rest of the night. The man who could do nothing but win all night, was "Mighty Mouse" Paul O~landi. Paul took home all the money, winning both the Scratch Semi-final and the Scratch Main event. "Mighty Mouse", a former nonhern California speedway champion, was flying too high to be caught Thursday night. Paul is also the Auburn track speedway promoter. Other winners for the evening included Ban Bast, from Auburn, who seems to be following in his uncle's footsteps, easily winning the JunioT Speedway Handicap Main. Also finishing in the money was John Cook, from Sacramento, winning the Handicap Main after starting way back on the 40 yard line. Watch out for Cook, he's hot this' year. Division II saW Bill Calicura, from Walnut Creek, taking the honors. Bill is looking good so far, having just been moved up from the Division III ranks. Two out of three of northern California's existing speedway tr.acks are being promoted by riders themselves this year. Paul Orlandi. although he is losing money weekly, keeps tqe Auburn track open and next week Dennis Robinson, from Napa, also a Division I rider, will open Napa California Speedway for an eight week run. Such dedication to the spon of speedway racing deserves a special thanks. These two riders are trying very hard to keep speedway going here in NorCal. They deserve the suppor:t of everyone in Speedway racing. MIIrk Grepon Greg TheIu LO~ TEAM NatIonal Hydron IlnncoleOlrpolftOlnflatedMd Ron Pomeroy PO Box 222-EaIt P'eterIburg.
