·_._._._._._._._._--._._._._._._._._.- NO-CRISIS OIL in five laps around the big course ... no wonder the guys who rode motos were looking a little done in as the day went along ... it was hotter than the hinges and even tough cross· country guys like Al Baker looked warm. Like many others. we folded our umbrellas and left before the whole day was over but some of the things we observed: Don "Squatty" Surplice's entry blank, under "experience," read "Igth overall Big Bear, 1951" darn near making Squatty a Dinosaur himself but if only 10% of today's young ones can ride half as good as Surplice went today we'll be surprised. The back mud hole was JUSt that, nice and deep for dinosaurs to wallow in and drive scorers up the wall with unreadable number plates. Another sound of the old days when the loudspeaker announced that someOne was looking for a capacitor for a 500 Trumpet. If you don't know about Triumphs and capacitors, you haven't missed muchl In the Vintage Novice class there was an old pre'war BSA, the rider appropriately garbed and waving to all the others passing him ... and some obviously didn't over extend their treasures; when you own something good you don't have to race the hell out of it. Clyde Earl's gorgeous Matchless is one, and Bob Tryon's old Harley. Charles "Feets" Minert brought two BSAs, a (sigh) Goldstar for the vintage race where Bob Bell and Clyde Dennen on Triumphs did him in, and a "newer" model which didn't get him into the main. In the Open Expert class Walt Foster was the winner ... wish he'd come out more ... but in the first 500cc Expert heat Mark Cain showed a clean pair of heels to David Aldana and Bobby Sanders - our current number one lightweight scrambler can really haul on a big bike. The save of the day went to Brad Oxley who came leaping out of the back section, up on the pegs into a front wheel landing at some 70 mph, and didn't come off - even Eve! wouldn't attempt that - and Tommy Walton did a pretty fancy save in the back section when hi~ mount tried to go sideways instead of forward. Rider number II, who in trying to emulate the early DeCoster, crossed it up in the air comin out of the back, didn't get it uncrossed in time and with the track not being straight there, got off in a horrendous crash he walked away from And then there was ... riding for Cole Bros. pulled off wins in both the 250cc and Open Pro classes. In the 250cc Pro class Jannings took the holeshot followed by International Yamaha's Mike Shoemaker and Tim Locey (Yam). Shoemaker pushed Jannings through the entire race but was unable to take the lead. Moto two was a repeat of the first rpund as Jannings again pulled the holeshot and the lead with Shoemaker in second and Locey in third. In the Open Pro race, Westlake Suzuki rider Mark Parkerson took the lead over Jannings (Mai) and Yamaha rider Joe Root, riding for Luft Shocks. Jannings soon dropped Parkerson int9 second, Root went down in a corner, leaving third to be filled by Bakersfield Yamaha rider Darren Oliver. Round two saw Oliver taking the lead followed by Jannings and Cole Bros. Maico rider Hal Strauss. Jannings pushed Oliver all the way, but Oliver held Ion £OT' the win. The overall for the nigl1nwem to Jannings with Oliver taking second and Strauss taking third. It was another back to back win night for Al Baker's FMF rider John O'Mara as he piloted his Suzuki to the overall win in the 125cc Pro class, fighting off the strong charge of Answer Products rider Mark Moscrop, who finished second, and Barber Honda rider David Lynch, who captured third. Our 12 oz. bottle is new. So is the formula inside. We are using more of the ingredients that protect your motor's moving parts. That lets you use less oil . .. gives you more power. Golden Spectro.is so flexible you can mix it anywhere from 40: 1 to 64: 1. One 12 oz. bottle in five gallons of gas yields a ratio of 50: 1. We're including an additive that helps retard detonation because it doesn't detract from the natural octane of the gas and even has a higher octane than racing gas. Our screw-top bottle lets you mix as much or as little oil as you want and save the rest. One dinosaur returned to the swamp at the Dirt Diggers TT. ( Enterprises at Indian Dunes.
