Brad moved into the lead of regional points witll three events left in this region. There are two at Sidewinders and one at Sturgis, South Dakota. Tom McCullough managed to win both regionals, but Junior regional point leader, Jeff Haney, heM on for second at Sidewinders and a founh at Castle Rock to Slay in the lead. VetsD·36 Invltatl~1MX By Sallee Hilton Photos by Steve Elliott DIXON, CA,JUNE 10 The First Annual Vets Invitational Motocross for AMA District 36 riders was as successful as could be expected on the hottest 38 Sunday of the year. Three' 20-minute motos were promised for the 30-40. year old Veterans. When the Sierra Old Timers, promoters of the special race, offered to shorten the motas in respect to the weather, it became a matter of "macho" and the offer was declined. The Old Timers, who rode support classes, only had to worry about surviving two 20 minute motos. In this age group the riders are more willing to recognize their limitations, and some backed out on their second run. About 110 riders participated in the well run event. The Argyll Park track was in good condition and the low profile, relaxed atmosphere (not possible at larger events), kept spirits high. The first race of the program was something special; an event for "Beginner Vets." Philip Donohue (Yam) will not be riding that class again after receiving the first place trophy with two moto wins. Also trophying were Richard Long (Yam), with three seconds, and Brian O'Farrell (Suz) for his-founh. fifth and third finishes. Special awards were also given in this class. Kay Corpe (Hon). the only female Vet, weqt the full three long motos. taking a third and twin sixths. She was presented with an "Endurance" award. Fred Granger (Hon), whose finishes .. iII not be mentioned. got the "Stick-to-itiveness" award. Estimates give, him credit for about 19 crashes per lap'. but he finished all three racesl In the Vet Expert, Junior and Novice races. each class had a triple winner. Redgie Mull (Mai) clearly outclasaed all the others in the Expen motos. The only rider to give Mull serious competition was Jerry Jackson. but only in the first two motos. The Junior triple crown went easily to Roger Bubak (Bul) and Novice Roben Farris (C-A) wiped out the rest of the riders in his three races. Henry Farris (Mai) took the first moto win among ihe Novice Old Timers, but a flat tire put him out of the second round. Gene Benner (Mai) picked up on that win and the overall for his first trophy in weeks of regular riding. Jim Armada (Suz), new to the Junior class, may not be there long. He ran away from the pack. Joe Hachenburg (Mai) was the only one keeping up in the first molO. but DNF the second try, leaving John Komtved (Mai) in charge of trying to keep Armada in sight. The Old Timers Masters and Experts took to the track for their first race which was loaded with strange happenings, and difficult to keep up with. Dick Mann's Suzuki didn't make it through the race, He had started out in his usual front position but crashed. Mann worked back up to third, going so fast that he coasted up the Matterhorn after the bike quit. Gene Higginbotham was enjoying racing with Larry Bubak so much that he forgot to keep the rubber side down; or maybe the "Duster Award" that he got for his spectacular crash was prearranged! Bill McClinton couldn't keep his chain on the sprocket but still managed to be first Master due to Higginbotham's recovery time and Mann's DNF. Bubak, the first Expen, was 40 seconds ahead of McClinton, and even further ahead of second Expert. Carl DeLong. The second moto was much more proper, with Higginbotham leading Bubak. They each finished first in their class. moto and overall, The National Motorcycle Patrol had an easy day of it. Not one injury. , . and it's a good thing there weren't any before the ambulance crew discovered and repaired their flat tire! It was a good day, and the next Vet's Invitational promises to be even better. Soot! Podorgoill. Back in town after campaigning the National trail for awhile.
