Turner held control of the lead and took awa y more money than any Pro on th e track . David Will iams ran his Malcolm Sm ith -sponsored Maico in second both times for second overall . The race was between W illiams and Turner all the way with W illiams hot on Turner 's ta il. hoping for a break that never came. In the first moto David Fisher finish ed 'third but second time around . the honor went to Joe D. Price. Fisher still had th e po ints to finish third overall. Thirt y-six rid ers lined up to dice through th e grass in th e 250c c' Pro race. but one showed superiority and that was fast Donnie Hansen. H ansen drove his Kolbe Can -Am through two traffic-filled motos to take first overall. U.S. Suzuki's Jeff Jennings rod e home in second both times but an airl ift off a jump sent him into a nose dive that threw both his feet off th e pegs and nearly wiped him out. Odie a nd Samarin continued to dice over th e short . fas t cou rse for th e remainder of th e race. Although it was th e quiet . soft-spoken Odie who first passed th e checkered . his fast friend. riding for Oceanside Suzuki . was only a short distance behind . In the Novice class. 14· year-old Mark Heth got the holeshot and held a big lead over Kevin Case and Greg Smith until the ninth lap. At this point. Heth was litera lly down and out because of the unsportsman -like actions of an asinine rider. In the m eantime. Case and Smith were holding the fans ' attention with their continual switching game. At the finish . Case . who rides his 175cc IZ. (IT engine. YZ frame) for Race Way Cycle . was out front by at least a half a bike length. Immediatel y upon lea ving t he fini sh , Samarin rode his littl e 125cc Suzuki to the starting line where the 250cc machines were warming up. Roland Wood got th e holeshot with Samarin, Craig Adams. Warren Barr and John T aylor right behind him . On the second lap. Vanya took the lead with Ad am s almost beside him . W ood d ropped ba ck. sparring with Barr and Taylor who wer e trying to hold off T ed Va nder Raa dt and Scott Kinnier. Barr's sea t came off. Taylor seized and Adams passed Vanya. For nin e of t he 13 laps. Ad am s a nd Vanya were SO close. it could still be anybod y's ra ce . On the 10th la p . eithe r Vanya or his 125cc tired and Adams began to increase his lead . Incid entally. Adams had put his KTM toget he r just before th is race and was hoping it would sta y together. It did . He completed each lap in four and on e -half minut es and passed the ch eckered all alone . Th e yo u ng Russian claimed second with a pretty good lead in front of VanderRaadt and Kinnier . John Burr's " Racin' Jason" Prater claimed the overall win in the Mini 39
