The SRA Carlsbad GP 250cc class w in went to Craig Adams. 40 class but he had a good run for his money . Bellflower Yamaha's Da ve Trager finished as close to Prater's front tire as possible and still be called second. Their finish was quite a treat especially when these two young lads shook hands and thanked each other for a su per race. The first two laps had the number one spot up for grabs in the Senior race as Bill Misner, Sugar Daddy, Mike Meyers and Charlie Conway were all auditioning for the part. Meyers' machine began to go sour - moving him back whi le R ich a rd Prouty , Harold Soens and Vern Heth joined the fun . By the third lap, the "fuzzy faced" red head , Charlie Conway, claimed the spotlight by moving his KTM out ' front. Soens was running second, then went out with a flat, and Sugar Daddy was a bit heavy on his Yamaha's throttle and didn't make a sharp left turn . For reasons unknown, Misner was out and Prouty was now in second with Meyers in third. "01' Fuzzy Face" looked as if he was performing all by his lonesome but second place was still a three-ring circus. Sugar Daddy was determined to make up lost ground but he · had picked up a tail. Vern Heth and his Yamaha were making Sugar Dad dy's bike look like a train. The pair worked forward and after " 01' Fuzzy Face" passed the checkered, it was Sugar Daddy and Heth for second and third . The Open race finalized the day's events and wha t a race it was. Craig Adams, in his second race of the day, seemed to have things-all sewed up. In the fifth lap, however , Adams succumbed to jetting problems and Ron Schwab and Corki Moore began one of the most ferocious battles this reporter has ever witnessed . Behind this pair, Jim Odie (on a 125cc), Tim Barlow, 'Pa u l Huffman, Dave Wentz , Keith Fearing and Roland Dean were so close and switching so often that this reporter was not sure who was in third. When Schwab (who was leading) , stopped on the white flag lap for a pit stop , this reporter became concerned. Moore had just dropped out and due to the side by side switching, this reporter did not know who was in second p lace. Fortunately, (for me), Ron Schwab was the first of the above mentioned riders to complete that last lap. . ' . SRA says thank ' you . to George Marsha ll, who broke a wrist whi le sweeping, and to Warren Barr, who took his p lace. Official results pending. Connolly takes new class at D·37 scrambles By Maureen Lee Photo by Dan Mahonyl Wizard Racing Photography ELSINORE,'CA, APR. 29 Scram bles riders had a the long awaited Ol d class got underway really " official" yet ball Timers it's no t but i t provides a lot of fun. When you do get beat it's by someone else with silver threads in the hair, not by some 14· year-old who has no respect for his eldersl After winning some District 37 number one scrambles plates , Jim Con nolly aba ndoned .us and went motocrossing for six years but he came 'back Sunday with a motocross Maico and did in the rest of the O ld Timers, people like Bill Bartels, District referee Den nis Rosenberg, Jack Dannenberg. Ed Steffen and Larry Bird. There were 10 of 'em in all and the starts were hila rious. Mike Boyle's number plate read ~ ~ he was on an 80cc bu t believe it or not , he didn't finish last ~ there were two other gentlemen on ' much larger machines who were behind him . Rick Marquis showed up with his new 500cc Honda, took off the headlight and then proceeded to wail on 'em all, Connolly included, for awhile. He got a third and a second, . but DNF the last rou nd . Ed Steffen emerged third overa ll behind Larry Bird and everyone had a hell of a good time. So, if you've earned the right to be an Old Timer come on out and , have a good time. If you guys promise not to use me for traction I just might break out the old Beezer and join you . Mark Ledbetter took a trip into the fence in the 125cc Novice/Amateur class, a feat that took some time to ge t his bike out of the fence's clutches. Jimmy Rosa won the first round, with Novice Ted Thompson second. In the next two though, it was Thomas winning both after having his hands very full with Jimmy Snow , and Rosa and Greg Nelson were not too far away . at any time. In the 125cc Experts , Bud Carroll won it and everyone did exact ly the same thing each moto in all six places including Jim Connolly's three fourths on a tall 125cc Honda, although Mark Zehner and Mark Bowe each swapped sixth place around on the last mota. Tommy Walton, sporting a super new paint job on his bike, came home the win ner in the 250cc Amateur class with two seconds and a first. Jeff Johnson beat him in the first one and Ross Klatt did it in the second. Walton rea lly had to work at holding off Klatt in the last one. A tip of the helmet to Tommy - he wants to turn Pia but he knows we need him at the scrambles q ualifier and nationa l so he 's waiting. There's a sportsman for you because we'll be entertaining the rest of the co untry this year on our home turf and we'd better do a good jobl Pete Hames took off with the first two 250cc Expert motos, wit h Joe Steffen second; J oe won the third. Pete passed Joe just going into the back straight in the first mota, m aking .a space where I swear there wasn't one, I don't even think the track surface exists where he made his move. J oe' did his part by not moving over either ... all part of the fun and games of racing. I'll say it again: if Larry Bird had a competitive Yamaha all set up like the rest of the gang in that class, some of you would have a hell of a hard time catching him . In the 500cc Novice class which keeps getting bigger and bigger, Jim Morris won the first mota, and was leading the second when his bike let go right a t the line as the wh ite flag ca me out. Bob Eary was another DNF after getting a first and second. and Mike McCauley won with a 5-2-1. We especially liked the ru n up through the pack Eary did in the second moto, Novice John Wells may take bows, he won the O pen class with two seconds and a first, taking on the likes of Steve Miller, Dave Peters and Bill Bartels. Good show, John, although we ha ve to admit your Yamaha is a bit nimbler t han Miller's big bore Yammie and Peters' Triumph. John's is a 580cc and it goes . Results MIN I COM B: 1.
