MAR. 25 Sunny skies and a record 432 entries converged on Willow Springs this Sunday for the start of the American Federation of Motorcyclists road racing season. This was the first of 14 points-paying races schedu led for 1979. An exciting three-way battle high lighted the Sidecar event. opening race of the program. The Lougeel Culver outfit led by two lengt hs down the front straight on lap one. but were passed for the lead by the Breesel Morris unit going up the hill on la p two . Lougee (1;44 la ps) slid by Breese coming out of the sweeper ont o the , front straight at the end of that lap to reta ke the lead. The AFM and AMA Number One plate holders. Pete Essaff and Kurt Kritikos, meanwhile. had moved into the fray. and took over the lead (1 ;43) on the next lap . As Essaff gradually stretched out his hand. Breese moved back around Lougee to eventually take second. In the Open GP . pre· race favorites Bruce Hammer (Yam). Harry Klinzmann (Yam) and Keith Code (Kaw) were gridded together on the front row . Hammer (1:33) shot off the line first and was never seriously challenged as he pulled away from Klinzmann at a second a lap. John Gidney (Yam) was an impressive third over talented opposition. For the first half of the 410cc Production race. Thad Wolff (Yam) held a narrow lead over Dick Fuller (Yam) and Malcolm Hill (Yam). Bu t Hill (1;43) . now riding for tuning-ace Ed Toomey. slipped off Wolff and Fuller on the fifth la p and never relinquished the lead. Fuller passed Wolff for second place as they headed into the last lap . and held on until the finish . In a tune-up for next month's SixHour Endurance Race. 50 ' 550-750Open Production bikes thundered into Willow's tight left -handed turn . The race result was never in doubt as Lee Fleming (Due , 1:39) blasted down the front straight at the end of th e first lap with a three-second lead over team mate Whitney Blakeslee (Kaw) and Kurt Knollenberg (Kaw) . Knollenberg. meanwhile. put up with pressure from 750cc winner Mike Hishiki (Hon) . One of the top conren ders, Wendell Phillips (Mr. jags Nor). never even made the stan, as his bike developed minor, problems on the pre· grid. Later in the day Fleming completed his usual double with a victory in the Box Stock race. Pav ement ace John Glover (Yam) crashed in practice. trashing his fairing and badly bruising h is left hand. john (1:36) took the lead at the sta rt of the 250cc GP . with Gennady Liubimsky (Harry Hunt Yam) . last year's 250cc points winner. in second. Gennady took over the lead on the back straight on the fourth la p . but John repassed on the outside of the very tight turn nine. Two laps later Gennady briefly took the lead again . onl y to have john go back by. and lead the start of the final lap. Gen nad y found "something extra" though . and pulled away on the last lap. taking the checkered flag with two seconds to spare. Steve Mallonee (Ka w, 1;38) p assed early leader Pat Eagan (Suz) and pulled away to a six-second win in the Open Superstreet race. j ohn Williams (Yam) . won the under·600cc Superstreet class, with Nick Theroux (Yam) edging Steve Sheftel (Yam) for second on the last lap.. • Results 5Oa: GP: 1.
